Workout Gear Gifts

Give gifts suited to the activities your recipient enjoys.

Selecting gifts for a friend or family member is sometimes a confusing task. Choosing the right gear for those who are sports- and fitness-minded may be even more confusing, especially if you don't participate in the same activities.

Apparel

Select workout apparel based on the weather and activity.

Natural clothing fibers appeal to many people, and synthetic fibers that employ innovative knit techniques to wick moisture away from the body are major players in the world of sports-minded individuals, explains Spark People. Choose gifts of ventilated tanks and shorts for warm weather workouts. Insulating layers come in ultra-thin or fleece lining for cold-climate running. Flattering yoga pants are appropriate for yoga, and they are often worn as stylish post-workout wear too. Most exercise enthusiasts value high-quality socks. With so many styles on the market designed for hiking, running and field sports, something as simple as a pair of socks could be a favorite gift.

Equipment

Walking sticks are useful gifts for hikers.

Yoga mats are practical gifts for the yogi in your life. Fitness balls are also useful gifts for yoga and pilates lovers and are popular for many other styles of workouts. Fitness walkers carry dumbbells for more challenging walks, and strap-on weights add resistance to lunges and squats, explains The Walking Site. If hiking is your friend's favorite activity, a sturdy walking stick or pole is a thoughtful choice. Reusable water bottles are universal gifts that any active person appreciates. Personalize an aluminum bottle with your friend's name or initials for a nice touch.

Accessories

MP3 players are appreciated by runners.

Hikers appreciate a dependable compass, while runners and walkers often use of heart-rate monitors. Small MP3 players that fasten to clothing with headphones that stay in place are especially nice for people who spend a great deal of time outside. According to Brunel University's School of Sport and Education, music is shown to not only help runners block outside influences, but it also sets the right mood for the workout.

What Not to Buy

Let your friend choose her own hat.

Some things that seem like great gifts are actually very personal choices. Hats are one such item. Some prefer ball caps while others would rather just wear a bandanna. No matter how functional or stylish you may think a hat is, it's hard to select one for someone else. Nutrition books and plans could send the wrong message and gym memberships may never be used. Exercise DVDs and books may not suit the recipient's taste.

Why Is Speed Important In Football

Football is the ultimate contact sport, renowned as the most physical of physical games. The violent collisions that occur on every play can often distract from the importance of physical fitness beyond strength. Speed is a crucial element of successful play for every player on the field, especially backs and skill players, as well as a key advantage in the most violent aspects of the game.

Speed in the Passing Game

The position that places the most emphasis on speed is wide receiver. The reasons for this are obvious: a receiver who can run faster than anyone else on the field will be difficult to cover, since no one can keep up with him. The advantage can be exploited on virtually every route, running short crossing routes or long fly patterns. Or the team can use a receiver's speed on slant routes and receiver screens, getting the ball into the receiver's hands so he can run with it.

Speed in the Running Game

Speed is also a key quality in the running game. While the running game depends much more on strength than the passing game does, speed certainly gives an advantage. Generally, most runs are under 10 yards and include much physical contact. But when runs are broken for longer yardage gains, the play usually turns into a foot race. The first few yards of a run, a running back is negotiating the stronger linemen and linebackers. After 10 yards, he is facing the secondary, cornerbacks and safeties, who are lighter and faster.

Speed at Skill Positions

All skill positions require speed, if for no other reason than to keep up with their opponents. Thus safeties and cornerbacks need to be fast to keep up with wide receivers and tailbacks. Quarterbacks must be agile and quick to avoid the rush of the defensive line on passing plays. Likewise, the special teams skill positions rely on speed, especially the punt and kickoff returners. Devin Hester, the NFL single-season leader in returns for touchdowns, is a prime example of a player whose speed has proven to be a great advantage in the return game.

Speed and Power

Speed is also crucial for the contact element of the game. Football is a game dominated by collisions, blocking and pushing. But physical strength tells only half of that story. Power is determined by both speed and strength. A player who can build up a full head of steam by running faster than his opponent will gather more momentum even if the other player is heavier. This momentum can make the difference in a block or tackle.

Speed at All Positions

It's also important for every player to be quick on his feet because the ball can bounce to anyone. Although such situations may be rare, offensive guards, defensive tackles, centers have all had opportunities to carry the ball or run downfield blocking after a fumble. Every player needs to be prepared for every situation, including carrying the ball, and speed is of crucial importance in such situations.

Tuna Fishing In Portugal

The rocky coastline of Portugal is renown for its excellent fishing.

Fishing is a major economic activity in Portugal. According to an article in USA Today, the Portuguese eat more fish than anyone else in Europe. Besides commercial fishing, Portugal also offers competitive and recreational big game fishing.

Tuna Fishing in Madeira

The waters around Madeira are home to several species of tuna.

Madeira, a tiny island to the southwest of the Portuguese mainland, is blessed with warm waters and several different species of tuna, including big eye, skipjack, yellowfin and bluefin. A number of companies on the island rent boats and equipment to visitors. Madeira Fishing offers full- or half-day fishing tours, including refreshments, equipment and insurance, for a flat rate. Three to six anglers may participate in the tour, and non-fishing friends or relatives may come along for an additional fee.

What Have On A Clear Liquid Diet

A clear liquid diet is usually prescribed for people undergoing surgery and medical procedures such as a colonoscopy. It is also recommended for individuals with gastrointestinal (GI) problems like inflammatory bowel disease where cramping and diarrhea can be moderately uncomfortable. If you are on a clear liquid diet, it is important to understand why and for how long.

Purpose of a Clear Liquid Diet

The foods in the clear liquid diet are absorbed easily and clear quickly from the body, which makes them ideal for surgical candidates. They are also an attractive option for people with gastric problems because they are very gentle on the digestive tract. You should not be on a clear liquid diet for more than a few days, since the foods do not provide all essential nutrients. It is only a temporary source of calories and hydration until you can eat solid foods again.

OK and Not-OK Food List

A clear liquid diet includes all liquids and foods that are transparent. Drink mineral water, Sprite, ginger ale, and clear sports drink. Fruit juices such as apple, cranberry, and grape, are fine as long as there is no pulp. Try broth, bouillon, or tea (without milk or cream). Eat Jell-O (minus the fruit) and popsicles. Suck on hard candy. Use honey, sugar, and syrup as sweeteners, and add salt to your food if you need more flavor. All opaque liquids and foods are excluded from the clear liquid diet. If you cannot see through the food item, do not eat it. Do not consume milk, soda, alcohol, tomato juice, or creamy soups.

Risks

Eating clear liquid foods will not fill you up, and since your choices are very limited, you may be tempted to reach for something that is not on your diet. Refrain from such impulses. If you are a surgical candidate, your surgery may be postponed or even cancelled--when things are in your stomach, you risk aspiration during intubation, which may later lead to pneumonia. If you already have gastrointestinal problems like cramping, eating foods excluded from the clear liquid diet will only create more agony.

The Next Step

The clear liquid diet is not meant to provide long-term nutrition. In general, if you do well with clear liquids--no nausea, vomiting, or upset stomach--then your physician will upgrade you to the next step, which is a full liquid diet.

What Is The Purpose Of Compression Shorts

Many distance runners count on compression shorts for comfort and support.

Popular among both elite and recreational athletes, compression shorts are specially-constructed athletic gear that provide support to the waist, groin and thighs during physical activity, namely distance running and cycling.

Purpose

Compression shorts separate and compress groin and thigh muscles, which can rub together during physical exercise and cause the sciatic nerve (located along the outer thigh) to become irritated, or in some cases, injured. Additionally, the shorts (which typically extend from the waist to mid- or low-thigh) provide warmth to the muscles, protecting them from stress and strain. They also provide protection from chafing and rashes, which can be both painful and detrimental to athletic performance.

Composition

Compression shorts are made from a blend of nylon and Lycra, making them durable, comfortable and malleable. Some compression shorts also feature wicking material, which wicks moisture away from the body. This keeps you dry and reduces the potential for chafing.

Advantages

Some athletes believe that compression shorts improve their athletic performance. By isolating the thigh from the hamstring, friction (which lessens momentum) is reduced. Uniform compression is thought by some to aid in speed and efficiency. While there has been no scientific or medical consensus on the performance-enhancing value of compression shorts, they remain popular among athletes who require gear that minimizes friction and protects against muscle strain.

Therapeutic Benefits

Compression shorts are often recommended by physical therapists to patients suffering from sciatica, a condition characterized by intense back pain. Sufferers may find relief by wearing compression shorts under normal workout clothes. Compression shorts separate and compress the thigh, thereby reducing further irritation of the sciatic nerve.

Proper Fit

Compression shorts should fit snugly but should not be too tight, enabling an athlete to move freely. In a well-fitting pair of compression shorts, a gap will form between the thigh and groin area. If more support is desired, look for compression shorts with a higher percentage of Lycra.

What Is Purgatory

Purgatory is considered a state of limbo where the souls of the dead go who are denied entrance to heaven but are not sent to hell, either. It is a temporary state of punishment and purification. Purgatory plays a prominent role in Catholic religion, but is it just a construct of Catholicism or do its roots go further back?

History

Roman Catholics, among other Christians, believe in the existence of purgatory as a realm of the afterlife, as well as heaven and hell. The Catholic faith has been accused of the invention of purgatory for purposes of monetary gain through prayer performed by priests for the souls of the deceased in purgatory. It is usually pointed out that purgatory does not exist because the word is not found in the Bible, but some early Christian writings mention a type of limbo and stress the importance of praying for the dead. Praying for the dead seems to only make sense if there is another realm besides heaven and hell. There would be no need to pray for those in heaven nor would prayer help those condemned to hell if there were no hope of redemption.

Features

Although purgatory is often portrayed as a realm, it is most often viewed as a state of existence. In this state, the souls are still unclean and must be totally cleansed of all sin before being admitted to the heavenly realm. Fire is also associated with purgatory, although it is not a fire of eternal damnation but rather a cleansing fire. Purgatory is also associated with a realm of punishment, but the punishment is temporary. The intensity of the punishment and time spent in purgatory is affected by the good deeds done on earth, love of God, true repentance and the prayers of friends and family members.

Function

Purgatory functions as a type of purification that removes every last vestige of sin so that the soul can attain heaven. Souls that are not sinful enough to be condemned to eternal hell, yet are not totally free of sin, must enter the purifying realm of limbo before they can be admitted to heaven. But those souls are destined to unite with God in heaven, which is why they must go through the cleansing process. Souls in this sort of limbo go through a painful suffering and various trials. The fire associated with this realm is thought to be different than the type of fire we know.

Geography

So where is purgatory? Heaven is depicted as being above or in the realm of the sky, while hell is depicted as below or within the bowels of the earth. These locations are thought to be physical. Purgatory is often depicted as a mountain mostly due to Dante's Divine Comedy, but it is also sometimes depicted as a middle realm between heaven and hell or a level beneath hell. In most instances, purgatory is simply seen as a type of limbo perhaps suspended between the upper and lower realms of heaven and hell.

Benefits

The benefits of purgatory are substantial. Even though there are varying amounts of pain and suffering to be withstood in the realm of limbo, the final results are an eternity in heaven with God. Once cleansed of all sin, the soul is free to spend eternity in paradise. Not every soul will experience the same amount of suffering in purgatory, nor will every soul spend the same amount of time there. Both of these factors will be dependent partially upon the acts performed in the earthly life. It is believe that praying for the dead can expedite the time spent in purgatory. All souls are released from limbo at the final judgment.

Significance

Catholics are not the only ones who believe in purgatory? Other Christian denominations believe in a type of limbo also. Hinduism believes that souls reincarnate until they reach a state of union with God. They do not adhere to a belief in eternal damnation, but do believe in a type of limbo where souls are punished for misdeeds in between reincarnations. In Islam, hell is often viewed as a place of temporary punishment for some souls, while it is eternal for others. Judaism refers to Gehenna, which is often considered to be another name for hell. In Gehenna, the sinner undergoes a purification for a portion of time. Whether purgatory actually exists or not is impossible to say, but many religions mention different levels of both heaven and hell. The basis for the doctrine of purgatory may very well lie in one of those levels.

What Do Pigeons Like To Eat

Pigeons like to eat grains and seeds but will also eat food left by people.

Across the world in major cities, pigeons are a common bird. Many people consider pigeons nuisance birds, along with scavengers like crows and magpies. The cooing that pigeons perform is similar to the cooing of doves. People tend to think of pigeons as dirty pests and doves as clean symbols of peace, but they are really from the same family. The reputation that pigeons have received as pests who will eat anything is mostly undeserved.

Background

The common name for the pigeon people are most likely to see is rock pigeon. The scientific name for the pigeon is Columba livia, from the family Columbidae which includes more than 300 species. They originated in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Pigeons first arrived in North America in Nova Scotia, Canada in the 1600s with Europeans. Some of them were domesticated and trained as racing and homing pigeons. Today, pigeons are considered feral because they are descended from escaped domestic pigeons.

Food

Domestic and feral pigeons like to eat grains and seeds. Feral pigeons will also eat bread crumbs, popcorn and other food left behind by people. If they had to choose between bread and birdseed, a feral pigeon would choose the birdseed, which normally contains a variety of seeds and grains. Domestic pigeons don't have access to lunch leftovers in the park, so their diet consists of their favorite food: grains, including corn, peas, wheat and sorghum. The grains are not cooked or popped --- they are fed to the pigeons raw.

Eating Habits

Pigeons swallow food whole, store it at the base of the throat, and then pass it into the digestive system. Pigeons need grit (small pebbles or rocks) to process their food so it can be broken down into nutrients. Feral pigeons can easily find grit, but owners of domestic pigeons need to supply it. Drinking water aids digestion and is also important for pigeons to bathe in -- debunking the myth that pigeons are dirty.

Reputation

The reputation that pigeons have as birds that carry disease is incorrect. It is the droppings that pigeons leave behind that may carry disease, not the pigeons. Those that live in cities keep themselves clean by frequently taking baths. Feral pigeons are known to eat vast amounts of human food like bread crumbs, popcorn and other leftovers. This leads people to believe that the bird is a scavenger and a nuisance, when all they are doing is cleaning up after people.

When To Apply Weed And Feed To Your Lawn

Keep your lawn looking lush with Scotts Weed and Feed.

Lawns benefit from the additional nutrients provided by an application of fertilizer. Unfortunately, the fertilizer won't stop the weeds from growing. Rather than apply a fertilizer and then a weed killer a few weeks later, individuals can take advantage of Scotts Weed and Feed products. One application of Scotts Weed and Feed will keep the lawn weed free and healthy. Does this Spark an idea?

Season

The best time to apply Scotts Weed and Feed is in the spring or fall seasons. It is also possible to apply the fertilizer with weed killer late in the winter season. It is important to note that Scotts Weed and Feed will stop any new grass seeds from germinating. If you plan on using it in the spring, do it four weeks after you plant the grass seeds. You can apply the weed and feed once or twice per year.

Temperature

Scotts Weed and Feed works best when applied in low to moderate heat. Temperatures exceeding 80 degrees Fahrenheit require excess watering after the application of the Weed and Feed to keep the lawn from becoming stressed. It is also not advisable to apply Scotts Weed and Feed until after any danger of frost has passed. When you notice the weeds and grass begin to grow, apply the Weed and Feed.

Conditions

Apply Scotts Weed and Feed on a day that has little to no wind. Wind can spread the Weed and Feed to areas of your property that you may not want it to go, or even to a neighbor's property. You can also apply the Weed and Feed after a rain, but not when rain is predicted to fall within 24 to 48 hours after application. You want the ground to be watered after application, but a heavy rainfall could wash the Weed and Feed away.

Other Considerations

Do not apply Scotts Weed and Seed directly after mowing the lawn. The product works best when the blades of grass have been allowed to grow for a few days. It is also best not to apply the Weed and Feed when the yard is going to be utilized by children or pets. The herbicides in the Weed and Feed are harmful to humans and pets. Wait until the Weed and Feed has completely dried in the yard before walking or playing on it.

What Are The Cures For Postnasal Drip

The sinus cavity is constantly producing mucus to keep the sinus cavity moist and clean. The sinus cavity is a large empty space located directly behind your eyes and nose. Its purpose is to filter the air before it enters the lungs. The sinus cavity is constantly emptying mucus into the back of the throat without a person ever being aware of it. When the mucus thickens and the body overproduces, the excess can be felt in the back of the throat causing postnasal drip.

Causes

Postnasal drip is commonly caused by irritation in the sinus cavity. The sinuses are very sensitive and can become irritated simply by change in air humidity, air pressure or climate temperature. The sinuses experience a lot of change during the summer months due to the constant in and out of air conditioning (cool, dry air) and outside (hot, humid air). This causes the sinuses to overproduce mucus that primarily drains in the back of the throat.

Medical Treatment

The most common treatment for postnasal drip is to take an over-the-counter decongestant. A decongestant will dry up the excessive mucus and help reduce any swelling in the nasal cavity. If the postnasal drip is being caused by seasonal allergies, taking a 24-hour, daily antihistamine will help restrict the body from producing histamines that cause allergy symptoms. A combination of both a decongestant and antihistamine may be needed if the postnasal drip remains.

Natural Cures

The key to curing postnasal drip naturally is to maintain the proper moisture in the sinus cavity. Saline sprays are one way to naturally moisten the sinuses. Running a humidifier at night as you sleep will also help maintain a healthy humidity for your sinuses. The sinus cavity operates the best in 40 percent humidity. Too much humidity can also cause sinus irritation leading to postnasal drip.

Prevention

In order to prevent postnasal drip avoid allergens and maintain a strong immune system. You can build your immune system by eating a well-balanced diet, exercising four times a week, getting eight hours of sleep a night and drinking at least six 8-oz. glasses of water daily. At the first sign of congestion or nasal discharge, take an over-the-counter decongestant in order to prevent postnasal drip.

Complications

If postnasal drip persists, it can cause throat irritation, a chronic cough and an upset stomach. The mucus can easily build up in the back of the throat causing irritation leading to a throat infection. As the mucus builds up, especially as you sleep, it can lead to an upset stomach and vomiting. If the postnasal drip is caused by a sinus infection, the infection can spread to the ears, eyes and the brain.

Total Gym Elite Vs Total Gym Xl

FitnessQuest makes the Total Gym Elite and the Total Gym XL, two fitness machines that operate according to the same basic mechanism. Rather than utilizing large weight plates or rod resistance technology, the Total Gym Elite and XL use the cable and pulley stem to allow exercisers to lift a percentage of their own body weight. Resistance can be increased or decreased by adjusting the incline of the platform, and the exercises are extremely low-impact as the platform glides fluidly back and forth on the machine. The Total Gym Elite and the Total Gym XL have some technical differences.

Dimensions

The Total Gym Elite and the Total Gym XL are both 84 inches deep, 40 inches wide and 83 inches high.

Weight Restrictions

While the Total Gym Elite can accommodate a user of up to 275 pounds, the Total Gym XL can support a user weight of up to 400 pounds. This has a lot to do with the overall structural integrity of the machines. The Total Gym XL, unlike the Elite, has a solid steel frame. This makes the XL more ideal for larger, heavier athletes such as football players or heavyweight boxers.

Features

In addition to the exercise machine itself, the Total Gym Elite comes with a number of features. These include an exercise chart, an instruction manual and nutrition a guide, an instructional video, a foam-gripped flexibility bar, an exercise mat, a set of dip bars and an hourglass-shaped glide board or platform. The Total Gym XL expands on these features, and includes a longer, wider glide board with extra padding and head support, a pair of ankle cuffs, an additional workout video, a water bottle holder, a platform for squats and enhanced chrome detailing.

Exercises

The Total Gym Elite promises 50 to 60 different exercises that can be performed, ranging from curls and lateral pull downs to bench presses and abs exercises.

There are six levels of resistance with the Elite, which start sat 4 percent of the user's bodyweight and maxs out at 60 percent. The Total Gym XL promises more than 60 exercises, and has a resistance range of 10 percent to 50 percent of the user's bodyweight.

Assembly

While the Total Gym Elite requires some minor assembly, the Total Gym XL comes fully assembled and can be used as soon as it is taken out of the box.

Price

The Total Gym Elite is priced around $325, which is considerably cheaper than the Total Gym XL, which sells for between $1,400 and $1900. There is also a newly developed motorized version of the XL, which can be as expensive as $2,400.

What Are Carbohydrates Used For In The Body

Carbohydrates come in two different forms. Simple carbs get digested quickly, and complex carbs get digested slowly. Together, they are responsible for a lot of actions in the body.

Long Term

Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscles of the body in the form of glycogen. This is called upon for energy when the body is performing activities like running, weight-lifting and playing sports.

Short Term

Carbohydrates are also used for short-term energy. This is why you should eat a snack if you need a quick boost of energy.

Replenish

After long intense workouts, carbohydrates are used to replenish used up glycogen. They are also used during long endurance events to keep glycogen stores high.

Fiber

Carbohydrates are where fiber comes from, and fiber helps the body eliminate waste. Fiber comes from complex carbs such as whole grains, beans, oat bran and wheat bran.

Brain Function

The brain also uses carbohydrates to function properly. When they are eaten, they turn to glucose, which is the sugar that brain feeds off of.

What Are The Effects Of Steroids On Your Heart

What Are the Effects of Steroids on Your Heart?

Despite the strength and aesthetic benefits, anabolic steroids are dangerous to an individual's overall health. One of the concerns is the added stress steroids place on the cardiovascular system and heart, including the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Significance

Anabolic steroids provide individuals with increased male hormone levels, such as synthetic testosterone. With routine use, these hormones increase musculoskeletal development and male sexual characteristics.

Benefits

The improvement in musculoskeletal development leads to increased strength levels and recovery abilities, making them very attractive to athletes.

Function

Steroids increase low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) and decrease high-density lipoproteins (HDLs). This leads to atherosclerosis, where fatty deposits attach to the inside walls of arteries, clogging passages and limiting blood flow.

Significance

Blood flow limitation causes blood pressure to rise, requiring the heart to work harder and the left ventricle of the heart to increase in size. Blood flow issues are critical, as blood not reaching the heart will cause a heart attack, and blood prevented from reaching the brain results in a stroke.

Prevention/Solution

Educating athletes or other individuals interested in anabolic steroids about the benefits and risks is the best way of preventing abuse.

What Time Of Day Is Best To Water Plants In Florida

Avoid watering plants in the afternoon when the temperature is at its highest or the water will simply evaporate before reaching the deepest roots.

Florida's hot climate makes it imperative to water lawns and plants. Within the state the daily temperature often averages over 90 degrees Fahrenheit for more than six months, according to the University of Florida. From June to September the state receives the majority of its annual rainfall of 60 inches per year, so the rest of the year requires adequate watering. Does this Spark an idea?

Irrigation Methods

In the sandy soils of most Florida regions, water quickly drains away. A slow irrigation method, such as a soaker hose or drip irrigation system, allows plants and their deepest roots to better absorb the irrigation water.

Time Frame

Avoid watering during the midday heat. Evaporation loss in the hot Florida heat often averages 60 percent, according to the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Water plants in the early morning hours for best results.

Warning

Avoid watering plants in the evening if nighttime temperatures dip below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, because the plant can suffer a higher incidence of diseases. If evening temperatures remain high, you can safely water without the risk of evaporation or disease.

Why Do I Feel Light Headed When I Drink Water

Dehydration is often associated with feeling light-headed. Long periods in the heat and sun, especially after exercising, can leave a person feeling dizzy and in need of water. Sometimes feeling light-headed can be caused not by a lack of water, but by drinking water.

Significance

Water is crucial for health. Factors that increase the need for water include environment, exercise, illnesses and pregnancy. Lack of water, or dehydration, can cause many health risks aside from feeling faint and dizzy.

Potential

While not common, it is possible to drink too much water. This can strain the kidneys as they attempt to rid the body of the liquid. Too much water in the body dilutes the sodium levels and dizziness and light-headedness can occur.

Warning

When a large amount of water is consumed in a short period of time, the brain may malfunction due to an electrolyte imbalance in the body's fluids. This is called water poisoning and feeling faint, dizzy, and nausea may occur.

Effects

According to St. Mary's Hospital nutritionist Tammy Fumusa, a person will most likely avoid feeling faint and dizzy from drinking too much water by simply going to the bathroom.

Runners

Runners need to drink water after they run, but too much water after a race can disturb electrolytes and put pressure on the heart. A Boston Marathon runner in 2008 died from a heart attack after drinking too much water too quickly.

Fact

Water is not toxic or poisonous but rapid and large amounts can be dangerous and disrupt sodium levels and electrolytes and tax the body's organs. A 2008 radio contestant died after drinking too much water without being able to use the restroom.

The Best Workouts For A Trim & Lean Body

Resistance training with light weights helps tone the body.

The most effective way to get a trim and lean body is to tone your muscle, and the most effective way to tone your muscle is through cardio exercise and strength training. Decreasing body fat, in combination with an increase in lean muscle, will give you a toned, lean body.

Low-Intensity Cardiovascular

Begin your workout with some slow-paced, low-intensity cardiovascular work. Try a fast walk or a light jog. This should last about 45 minutes to an hour. This warms up the muscles and gets the blood circulating. Its also more efficient at burning calories then you may think. In one hour, you could burn around 300 calories, and tone your legs and abs. Add some arm movement and some weights into the routine, and you have a total body workout.

Fast-Paced Cardiovascular

For higher intensity, more fast-paced cardiovascular workouts do the trick. Running at about 5-6 mph for 30 minutes, you will burn the same quantity of calories roughly (300-350), and you will be toning your obliques and leg muscles as well. Treadmills and elliptical machines come in handy for high-intensity cardio workouts.

Bike Riding

If you do not really feel like exercising, but want the body that looks like you did, bike riding might be the way to go. At high speeds, you could burn up to 500 calories in as little as 30 minutes (most people will burn closer to 250). Bike riding is great for your leg muscles, as well as your abdominal area.

Jump Rope

This may surprise you, but something as basic as a jump rope might hold the key to your dream body. Jumping rope tones your whole body, legs, arms, and abs, as well as burns up major calories. Jumping rope for 20 minutes a day can drastically change the way your body looks and the way you feel.

Step Towards Fitness

Stepping is one of the most popular ways to get toned, featuring choreographed dance moves designed to give you a total body workout. Classes can be found at most local gyms, as well as sold on DVD to practice at home. The classes are fun and target all areas of the body, the arms, abs, legs, and back.

Why Do People With Diabetes Lose Weight

Every day more and more people get diagnosed with diabetes. According to statistics reported in the documentary Food Inc., one in three people will be diagnosed with diabetes. There are many symptoms that are associated with diabetes including increased thirst, mental fatigue and rapid sudden weight loss.

The Types of Diabetes

Diabetes literally means and is characterized by excessive urine production. There are three common forms of diabetes, two of which are the most common. Diabetes Insipidus is the least common of the three. It is caused by a hormonal imbalance that causes the kidneys in the body to no longer conserve water, thus increasing the amount of urine, while diluting it.

Diabetes Mellitus is the more common form of diabetes, and has two forms. Type I diabetes, formerly known as Childhood Onset Diabetes, is believed to be an autoimmune disease, that is characterized by the body attacking and killing the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Type II diabetes, formerly known as Adult Onset Diabetes, is characterized by a body that no longer recognizes or responds to insulin. This ultimately leaves a lot of sugar in the bloodstream that eventually is removed from the body in the urine.

The Cause of Weight Loss

One of the symptoms of diabetes is sudden, rapid weight loss. All forms of diabetes are characterized by increased urine production. This increased urine production is the cause of the rapid weight loss. In the case of Diabetes Insipidus, the kidneys no longer reabsorb the water, and thus it leaves the body in the urine. In the case of Diabetes Mellitus (I and II), the body's inability to remove sugar from the blood stream (the function of insulin), causes it to build up to the point where the kidneys can no longer contain them, and sugar comes out in the urine. The problem with that is that sugar will carry with it water.

So in the case of all forms of diabetes, the weight loss is caused by an increase in water loss. Ultimately this method of weight loss if hard on the body, and can cause dehydration and further damage if left untreated.

What Gear Do You Need To Race A Dirt Bike

The proper dirt bike apparel will save your life

Dirt bike apparel is a necessity for riding safely, whether you are a casual rider or a full-time racer. Dirt bike safety gear can be expensive, but it's a small price to pay to protect your life, according to Dirt Bike 411. Before you make your purchases, educate yourself in the gear you need to safely ride your dirt bike.

Helmet

According to Dirt Bike 411, the helmet is the most important piece of safety gear. Serious head injuries will occur during a crash if the proper head gear is not worn. Finding a quality helmet should be at the top of your priority list. According to dirt-bike-tips-and-pics.com, countries where dirt biking is a popular pastime have their own helmet laws, so be sure to adhere to the standards of the country. For extra reassurance, be sure to choose a helmet that holds a SNELL rating--if a helmet has SNELL approval, it's a high-quality and safe helmet. Additionally, never buy a used helmet, according to dirt-bike-tips-and-picks.com. It could have been in an accident, and you can't always tell by looking at it if it's safe or not. A good helmet can retail for $100 or more.

Goggles

Goggles protect your eyes from debris and dirt on the track, but they also help you see the track better, according to Dirt Bike 411. Buying goggles is a pretty easy task, but there are a couple of things to look for when doing so. First, make sure your goggles seal around your face properly. If your goggles don't seal well, you will end up with dust and dirt in your eye, and, more importantly, your safety is compromised. Second, make sure your goggles are anti-fog. These goggles are equipped with an air-flow system that lets the goggles breathe and fight off fog, according to dirt-bike-tips-and-pics.com. Third, if you are serious about dirt biking (racing, etc.), you might consider buying goggles with a tear-off system, which allows you to replenish your vision in the middle of a race via a clear strip that you tear off when it gets dirty.

Boots

Your ankles and feet undergo tremendous pressure while dirt biking and even proper footwear often can't prevent injury. Without boots, however, your ankles could receive major injuries. Seems like a worthwhile investment, don't you? Buying boots is fairly simple. Just find a pair that fit, seem properly protected and are comfortable. The rest is up to you.

Neck Brace

While many believe the neck brace is not essential, the reality is that hundreds of neck and back injuries take place in professional dirt biking every year, and neck braces have the ability to minimize damage to the spine, according to dirt-bike-tips-and-pics.com. The bottom line is that a neck brace won't hurt and it might save your life. Why not wear it?

Body Armor

Body armor is essential to riding a dirt bike. The reasons include protecting your shoulders, chest, back and ribs and to provide protection against debris flying against your chest during a race. You must wear body armor during any form of dirt bike riding. The first rule of thumb in buying body armor is make sure it's comfortable. If it's not comfortable, according to dirt-bike-tips-and-pics.com, you won't be motivated to wear it. Other factors to consider are making sure it's lightweight, adjustable, flexible and fully protected. The function of body armor has the ability to save your life and protect the second most important part of your body -- your torso.

Track Team Decoration Ideas

Run with these creative ideas for your track team decorations at meets.

The 200-meter dash, the 1-mile run, relays and hurdles are track team events that require runners to be diligent and disciplined physically in order to win. Highlight that fact in your track team decorating ideas, applauding your team's past achievements while motivating them to keep running to win. And do it creatively, with unusual track decorations.

Dash Hall of Fame

Track team participants in the track dash event -- whether 55-, 200- or 400-meter -- will enjoy fans seeing decorations that highlight their particular contributions to the track running team. Make a "Dash Hall of Fame" wall decoration using photos of the dash team members in action on the track field during past competitions. Attach sheets with their winning stats displayed beneath each frame. Surround the entire collage of photos on the portable board (for outdoor or indoor use) with ribbon emblazoned with the names of all the dash types participated in by your school: 200 dash, 400 dash, etc. Place portable boards near fan seating and at meet snack areas, so spectators can bone up on each runners accomplishments as they wait for the meet to begin.

Runner Recognition

Fans of the track runners -- like the 1-mile runner -- recognize that your team runners have to cultivate endurance more than anything in this track event. Decorate the outdoor track meet field for home events with photos of your runners affixed to the top of long wooden sticks with a photo on each side. Place the sticks into the ground, an equal distance apart, around the outer perimeter of the track and turned to feature one photo to the bleacher seating and the other stick's side photo toward the runners. Wrap team-colored ribbon down the length of the sticks. Remove after that track event for storage until the next home meet.

Relay Handouts

It is all about teamwork when track participants run the relay, so make the decorations off the field a mirror image. Create a moving decoration by designing sheets of paper with the names of all your relay team members -- and their stats to date -- and roll them up. Tie them off with team-colored ribbon. Have each member of the relay team hand them out to the fan in each row on the end of the bleachers nearest them before the meet. Relay team members should pass out as many as there are people down that bleacher length, with other team members doing likewise. Ask the bleacher fans to "relay" the handout.

Hurdle Signs

Use extra hurdles to decorate your track meet. Make team spirit signs with poster board or heavy paper, promoting your dash, running, relay and hurdle event team members. Use one sign to show off the team's ranking. Feature the team's historical accomplishments on another sign. Plaster a team outfit on another hurdle board sign (minus names or numbers) and highlight a photo of a different hurdle team member next to it on the board, for each meet.

Why Does Diabetes Make You Lose Weight

Insulin

Insulin is a hormone in our body that controls the storage of fats and proteins. People with diabetes experience an insulin deficiency, which results in their bodies being unable to effectively store and use proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Since they are unable to store the needed nutrients, their appetites will increase while their weight decreases. For type 1 diabetes, if the insulin levels are not medically corrected, the fat tissue and amino acids in the muscle tissue are targeted, resulting in a loss of fat and muscle mass. This can cause a drastic decrease in overall body weight, but it is extremely rare and the diabetic will develop many other illnesses by the time such a weight loss occurs.

Ketoacidosis

Ketones are formed in our bodies when fatty acids and amino acids are broken down. Ketoacidosis occurs when high levels of ketones are present in the body and the body does not produce enough insulin to break the ketones down. Ketoacidosis is an extreme form of ketosis, which occurs in any otherwise healthy individual who has been fasting and results in weight loss.

Fluid Loss

Dehydration is a common symptom among diabetic patients. Diabetes causes an increase in blood sugar, which in turn leads to increased amounts of glucose in the person's urine. Excess urinary glucose will lead to increased amounts of urine being released and can lead to dehydration. If the body loses sufficient amounts of fluids, this can lead to unintentional weight loss. Diabetics with this type of weight loss experience increases in thirst.

Cachexia

Fluid loss and high glucose levels alone can both cause weight loss in a diabetic. When those factors are combined in diabetes, a person increases his risk of developing cachexia. Cachexia is extreme weight loss accompanied by atrophied muscles, fatigue, loss of appetite and general bodily weakness in anyone who is not consciously trying to lose weight. If the diabetic has secondary diseases such as Addison's disease, tuberculosis or pancreatic cancer, the possibility of developing cachexia will be significantly higher. The weight loss caused by cachexia cannot be reversed by increasing the intake of calories. Only certain types of drugs, such as steroids, are shown to be effective in treating cachexia.

What Is A Good Way To Lose Weight And Increase Running Speed

Drinking eight glasses of water a day helps keep you hydrated while losing weight.

Losing weight and getting into shape are actually two separate goals. One can lose weight by dieting and restricting their calorie intake. Getting into shape usually requires that someone establish a workout routine that mixes resistance training with cardiovascular exercise. However, that is not to say that they do not share some mutual beneficial properties. For instance, after losing weight, it stands to reason that someone may also improve their running ability. There are tricks to accomplishing both goals, so that reaching your target weight produces a healthier and faster you.

Instructions

Losing Weight

1. Determine the amount of calories you need to consume in order to lose weight safely. By calculating your Basal Metabolic Rate, you can determine how many calories you need to consume each day to lose one pound per week. (Losing one pound requires burning an extra 3500 calories over the course of a week.) The BMR formula is as follows:

(Body Weight x 15) + (Amount of Exercise x 3.5) = BMR

Subtract 500 calories from your answer to get the number of calories you need to eat per day.

2. Restrict your diet in a way that allows you to reach the BMR calorie number on a daily basis. Remove high carbohydrate and high fat foods such as bread, pasta, rice, crackers, cookies, chips, and desserts. Replace them with lower calorie foods. Fruits and vegetables are both high in fiber and low in calories. Swap a side salad (with light dressing) for that side of french fries with your sandwich; eat chicken and fish instead of burgers, skip the piece of chocolate cake in lieu blueberries and light whipped cream. Use the calorie guide below to swap out high calorie foods for lower calorie fare.

3. Drink plenty of water. Another dieting trick which is beneficial to your organs is to drink plenty of water. Eight glasses per day are recommended. (If you are exercising moderate to heavily, add two to three more glasses per day.) Not only will the water suppress your appetite, but it will keep you hydrated, and allow your body to flush unwanted toxins.

4. Eating small meals throughout the day. Rather than starving yourself throughout the day, or skipping a mid-day meal, be sure that you are consuming calories five to six times a day. If your body becomes too hungry, it will think it is starving and hold onto the fat you already have on your body. By eating meals throughout the day, your body will realize it is always being fed, and will have no problem shedding that fat. (Just be sure to stay within the BMR guidelines to lose weight.)

5. Watch the portion sizes. While items such as fruits and vegetables have very low caloric value, meats, bread, pasta and alcohol can have high caloric values. Pay attention to portion size to keep your calorie intake down. A recommended serving of meat is only four ounces, though many restaurants or deli counters serve eight to ten ounces, which would double your calorie intake.

6. Weigh yourself and chart your progress. Weigh yourself at the same time of day, on the same scale in order to get a consistent reading. Chart your progress, and strive for a weight loss of one to two pounds per week until you reach your goal weight based on your Body Mass Index or BMI.

Increase Running Speed

7. Keep your head stationary. Think of your head as the directional "rudder" for your body. Any movement to either side will cause a chain reaction in which the rest of your body moves to that side. Therefore to keep your body moving straight ahead, focus on an object in the distance which is straight ahead, and refrain from moving your head to the side.

8. Keep your hands loose and arms at a 90 degree angle. There can be a tendency you "clench" your fists when you are running really fast. This will only tighten your muscles throughout the body, causing them not to perform as effectively. Instead, keep your palms open and your thumb and forefinger gently in contact with one another. Also, place your arms at 90 degree angles and keep them close to your body. The objective is to minimize the drag as you move through forward.

9. Land primarily on the balls of your feet. With each step, after the ball lands, the heel should barely touch the ground before the next foot is landing.

10. Align your leg properly. Your foot should be pointing in the same direction as your knee, which should be aligned with your hip. If any of these joints are slightly off, you are slowing yourself down. Practice a symmetrical alignment in order to maximize your speed.

11. Practice sprints and quick drills. While doing laps will get you into cardiovascular shape for long runs, performing sprints will quicken your pace. Practice running short distances of 50, 100 or 200 yards often. Combine those sprints with the tools listed above to both lose weight and increase your speed.

Ways To Forget About Your Husband Cheating

Infidelity often destroys many marriages and families

Infidelity is one of the worst things that a marriage can encounter and in many circumstances it leads to the end of the relationship. The discovery that your husband has been cheating on you with someone else is usually a huge shock that is bound to cause a great deal of hurt and pain. In some cases, the women decide to stay and keep the marriage intact. But whether they stays or goe, they must first learn to come to terms with their husband's adulterous ways.

Don't suppress your feelings

For many women, the discovery that their husband has been unfaithful is devastating, regardless of the circumstances. You are likely to feel hurt and betrayed -- and angry. Don't bury these emotions and cover them up with a brave facade. This will only lead to greater pain in the long run. It is better to confront this pain and take your own time to get through these feelings without worrying about what other people think. Facing this pain and hurt and allowing yourself to feel it is an important part of the healing process.

Counseling

Whether or not you decide to stay with your husband and try to reconcile the relationship is your own decision. Either way, it is usually beneficial to enlist the services of a therapist or relationship counselor to help you work through your feelings. The decision to stay with your husband after he has cheated may not be popular with friends or family, so the support and empathy of a professional who can remain objective on the matter can be a great help if you are trying to forgive and forget the infidelity.

Remember the Good Times

After infidelity happens, it can be very hard not to visualize your husband with his lover. Your mind will most likely be clouded with hate and anger. Trying to put that out of your mind won't be easy but if you intend to stay with your husband and salvage the marriage, you will need to let go of these feelings of resentment. Remembering the good times, the fond memories of him and the happiness you both shared may help you stay focused on why you are trying to repair the damage.

Spend Quality Time with the Kids

If you have children, then the repercussions of your husband cheating will also have an impact on their lives. Regardless of whether you decide to stay with your husband or not, it is important not to forget about the children. In fact, if you focus more time and energy into your relationship with them, they can help you get over this shock and hurt. This will take your mind off what has happened and help you look forward to the future.

Rebuild the Trust

This can take a long time and can be an exhausting and emotionally challenging mission. But if you intend to stay with your husband, whether it is for the sake of the family or because you truly believe the relationship is worth saving, then it essential that you reestablish the trust that was lost. This may require you and your husband to restart your relationship with new ground rules. You may have to take things slow as if you were dating again and tryi to gradually rekindle the romance that brought you both together.

Triathlon Training For Beginners

A triathlon tests your endurance in three sports, but not all triathlons are created equally. The first step to success is choosing the race that fits you. Training for one of these events is rewarding, but it is not a decision that should be taken lightly. It can be costly and time-consuming, and there is the potential for injury.

Finding the Right Race for You

The most popular triathlons are the Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman and Full Ironman. Sprints vary but generally consist of a half-mile swim, a 13 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run. Olympic triathlons are usually a 0.93 mile swim, 24.8 mile bike ride and 6.2 mile run. The Full Ironman is a 2.4 mile swim, after which you get on a bike and ride for 112 miles and then run a full 26.2 mile marathon. A Half Ironman is exactly half of those distances.

Your first triathlon should be a Sprint, especially if you do not have a solid base in running, biking or swimming. If you have a strong base in at least one of the three sports and can easily complete the first weeks training, you may be able to start at the Olympic level but is more advisable to maintain your base and build up the two sports.

Other Considerations

Your options for a race are also limited by the hours and days a week that you can dedicate to training. You will need to train four to six days a week for Sprint and Olympic triathlons and five to seven days a week for the Half and Full Ironman triathlons. The Sprint will require two to seven hours a week. The Olympic will require three to 12 hours per week. The Half Ironman will require five to 14 hours per week and the Full Ironman will take eight to 18 hours a week. The training period itself can range from three to seven months.

Cost might also be a consideration. While the lower level races might average around $70, according Pete Williams on RunnersWeb.com, entry fees for Ironman triathlons average at $475. Equipment will also vary. For a Sprint you can get away with a good pair of running shoes and a bike. If you plan to go for the Ironman you might want biking shoes that cost around $100 and a triathlon bike which tend to cost $3,000 to $5,000. You may also have to consider the cost of a gym membership for pool access in the winter.

Training Schedules

There are several ways to develop a triathlon training schedule but one of the best places to start is online. A website like Tri-Newbies Online offers free detailed training schedules, available at the first link under Resources. Other sites offer training programs to its paying members. BeginnerTriathlete.com charges $25 to $80 for six months, with the most expensive membership including one-on-one coaching. You could also hire a personal trainer to develop a plan and work with you while you train. According the National Board of Fitness Educators President Dr. Sal Arria, personal trainers average between $60 and $70 per session.

Preventing Injuries

Always consult a doctor before beginning triathlon training. According to BeginnerTriathlete.com, this is especially true if you are injured or have a history of injuries or a history of being overweight. If you are 20 pounds or more overweight you might have to start out with strength training and only biking or swimming because the impact caused by running will be too great for your unconditioned knees and could cause injuries.

Stick to your training schedule. There will come a time while in training when you start to feel really good so you think, why not try going as long and hard as you can? Resist this urge; training programs are designed to slowly increase your endurance and strength as well as give you the proper recovery time your body needs in order to prevent injury.

Rate of Advancement

Once you have built up your endurance at the Sprint level and maintained it for at least four to six months then it is safe to begin training for the Olympic level. The same is true for advancing from the Olympic to the Half Ironman and from the Half Ironman to the Full Ironman.

What Is An Appropriate Gift For A Phd Graduate

Finding the right gift for a PhD grad can be a challenge.

It takes a lot of years and a lot of studying to earn a doctorate. Choose wisely when looking for the right gift for someone completing this major milestone in his life. The gift should honor the significance of of your loved one's outstanding academic achievement.

Diploma Frame

Have the diploma professionally framed; your graduate will appreciate this gift for years to come. Custom framing and matting charges can be expensive, and framing the diploma may not be high on a cash-strapped graduate's list of priorities. The graduate can display the diploma in his office or workplace, providing a constant reminder of both his achievement and your thoughtfulness.

Alumni Gifts

Many PhD graduates take pride in the college where they earned their degrees. Most colleges and universities offer an array of items emblazoned with the school's crest or logo, therefore you can gift ideas, ranging from clothing to blankets to jewelry. For both male and female graduates, a school ring, engraved with the graduation date, will remind them of their alma mater.

New Wardrobe

If the graduate will be looking for a job, new clothing can help make the right impression during job interviews. For the male graduate, you can offer to purchase a suit or have one tailor-made. For the female graduate or if your budget is lower, provide a gift card to a favorite clothing store.

The Gift of Cash

The cost of the typical doctoral program has increased over the past few years, swelling to more than $20,000, according to the Inside Higher Ed. As a result, many graduates with a PhD enter the work force possessing more knowledge than money. You may not think a cash gift if thoughtful, but it is practical, especially if the graduate needs to pay student loans, credit card debt and other bills accumulated during college.

What Are The Causes Of A Computer Running Slow

Frustrating computer issues are not always harmful.

Computers truly are one the marvels of modern life. However, few things are as frustrating as a computer that seems to creep along instead of working efficiently. Numerous issues have an impact on how fast your computer performs tasks. Some are dangerous, and others are not. Read the manufacturer's materials for your computer and operating system to begin the process of troubleshooting, as each system works a bit differently.

Too Many Applications

Of all the reasons computers run slow, running too many programs at the same time is highest on the list, according to Colby-Sawyer College. Unfortunately, you may not know every application that is running; sometimes programs are hidden, and are designed to run every time your computer is operating, whether or not you choose to run them. Some programs automatically install other unrelated programs on your computer without your knowledge, and those are often designed to run every time your computer is operating. Check your system to locate all programs that are running. You may not see all of them, so make sure to "unhide" hidden programs. This process is different from one operating system to another. It is not unusual to find twice as many hidden programs as unhidden. Be sure each unwanted program is not a necessary component of another before closing the application or uninstalling it.

Spyware and Viruses

Spyware and viruses are usually installed secretly. Spyware sets itself to run automatically. Your computer picks up malicious spyware and viruses from a number of places like unsafe websites and forwarded emails, explains Best Security Tips. Forwarded emails are those that enter your inbox with "Fwd" as part of the subject line. When one appears, it has usually found its way through hundreds or even thousands of other computers before reaching yours, picking up harmful content in a similar way as you catch a cold. Also, spyware and viruses are sometimes intentionally attached to that type of email. To be safe, don't open forwarded emails, no matter who sends them to you. Spyware and viruses attach to one of your software programs and eventually reach the computer's operating system, where it creates much more damage. Spyware and virus removal software is available in electronics stores for purchase. They detect and quarantine or remove malicious content before it has a chance to attach to and branch out through your system.

Other Reasons

A slow computer isn't necessarily bombarded with too many programs, malicious spyware or viruses. Sometimes, computers seem to run slow because the system is outdated or there isn't enough memory. Perhaps your connection speed is slow due to bad weather, using dialup instead of broadband or DSL, or the website you want to view has a lot of traffic, explains Microsoft. Older computers seem slow, even if they are in top working condition. They do not have enough resources to run newer software or access certain websites. Check your computer's specifications to see if yours accepts upgrades. Some computers are upgradable by the user at home, and others require a professional to do the job. Eventually, most computers outlive their usefulness, and must be replaced.

The Best Running Method For Speed

Train for speed.

Running with speed means quicker turnover of the legs, plain and simple. Gaining speed is vital to win races, either on the track or a road race. Spending time on the track working on speed can make a huge difference. Speed training is also beneficial for many other sports that require sudden acceleration or quick action. Proper sprint technique requires a tall body, leaning slightly forward from the hips, chest up, with the weight on the balls of the feet.

Instructions

Proper technique

1. Proper sprint form

March down the track with your foot in a dorsi flex, or toe-up position, so that the foot strikes the track at mid-foot, not the heel. Arms go opposite of the foot, right arm-left foot.

Try the same drill at a quicker pace.

Power skip down the track, which is an explosive strength move. A power skip is skipping for height. The foot strike is the same, with a powerful arm drive up into the air.

2. Mark a specific distance on the track. The distance can range from 30 meters to 50 meters for short running drills. Run that distance using different levels of intensity, from about 75 percent to 95 percent. Run the distance about six to eight times, using the walk back to the start line for the resting period. Focus on proper running form: tall body, legs lifted high, up on the mid-foot.

Grass surfaces can also be used for drills. If the grass is free of debris, barefoot running is also an option. Running barefoot allows you to feel how your feet should be hitting the ground.

3. Speed drills

Mark off a long area, about 100 meters. Place check marks every 20 meters along the way. Start slowly and increase your speed at each check mark. By the time you hit the final check mark, be running full speed. At the last check mark, slow down to stop at the end.

You can do ins and outs on the same course. Designate certain sections of the course as full-speed areas, when you run through them increase your speed. When you run out of them, do not slow down; just cruise through the area.

4. Tempo training

Run the straight sides of the track quickly. Go slower on the curves. Always focus on proper technique; do not set back on the heels. Other types of tempo runs would be to reverse and run hard on the curves and easier on the straightaways of the track, or to run quickly from one marker to another, either on the track on on a road.

5. Strength training is important.

Focus on exercises for all parts of the body. General exercises such as squats and lunges strengthen the legs, hips and core area and also focus on balance. Upper-body exercises to include are push-ups, bench presses, shoulder presses, and bicep and triceps work. Time spent in the weight room is just as important as time spent on the track.

Washing Instructions For The Nike Drifit Hat

Some caps can draw sweat away from your head.

While most people know Nike as a manufacturer of sneakers, it also makes a range of athletic apparel, including the Nike Dri-FIT hat. The Dri-FIT hat is made out of lightweight material, a combination of microfiber and polyester. Instead of just absorbing sweat, it sucks sweat away from the wearer's skin. This makes for a more comfortable experience, particularly important for athletes who spend a great deal of time outside in direct sunlight. Your Nike Dri-FIT hat will need washing just like any other hat, due to an accumulation of sweat, dirt and grease from extended wear. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Fill a basin with warm, not hot water. Combine 2 tbsp. of a microfiber detergent. This type of detergent is especially designed for clothes made of microfiber blends. Swish the detergent and water together with your hand.

2. Submerge the hat in the water. Scrub the sides of the hat against each other, removing built-up dirt and grease. Continue this process until all dirt is gone. Rinse the hat with cold water until the water runs clean.

What Is The Life Span Of A Water Heater

What is the Life Span of a Water Heater?

It's the worst possible way to find out your water heater has dies; while in the shower, with a head full of shampoo. Water heaters are often taken for granted and pushed well beyond their intended lifespans. Knowing when a water heater is about to give up the ghost can not only prevent icy showers, but also save money at the same time. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

Both electric and gas-powered water heaters are tall cylindrical appliances which warm and store an amount of water, typically 30 gallons. These major appliances are intended to run without maintenance for between 10 and 15 years, according tot he U.S. Department of Energy. Of course, this lifespan is dependent upon the water source, regular maintenance, and several other factors.

There are new "tankless" water heaters that do not store water, but instead use a series of pipes surrounded by heating elements. Though popular in Europe for decades, tankless water heaters are relatively new in the United States. Though significantly more expensive than traditional water heaters, a tankless water heater can last up to 30 years.

Time Frame

During the average 10 year lifespan of a water heater, the minerals that have dissolved into the water source can be deposited on the inside of the tank. Calcium and lime, in particular, react when heated and bind to the inside of the tank. The result is a tank that slowly loses capacity as well as having to use more energy to heat the same volume of water because of the rock-like nature of these mineral deposits. Untreated "hard water," that is water with a high lime or calcium content, can reduce the lifespan of a water heater by two or more years. Additionally, some sources of water, such as springs and wells, can pull up sediment and deposit sand and mud inside the water heater, reducing its effectiveness even more quickly that minerals. A water heater attached to one of these sources should be drained and flushed about once a year.

Size

The size of the water heater may have an effect on its life expectancy as well. If a water heater is too small for the household and is constantly heating large volumes of water, this may damage the glass lining of the water heater, wear out the heating elements faster, or cause electrical problems. Water heaters that are too small will need to be replaces at least two years earlier than they normally would in an appropriate setting.

Conversely, a water heater that is too large for a household will need to work harder to maintain the volume of water it already has stored, which may in turn cause higher electrical or gas bills though it will not necessarily diminish its life span.

Benefits

No matter what kind of water heater used, regular maintenance will increase its life span. A certified heating and plumbing specialist can detect potential problems, recommend filtration systems (if necessary) and take other measures to prevent a premature breakdown of the water heater. The manufacturer of your water heater may have specific requirements for routine maintenance, so consult the owner's manual before calling a plumber. Regular maintenance can extend the life of your water heater by up to five years.

Considerations

Though the average life span may be more than a decade or so, replacing your water heater about every 10 to 15 years not only ensures smooth heating of water, but also saves energy and money. According to the Department of Energy (DoE), heating water accounts for 13% of the average utility bill. In order to maximize savings, the DoE recommends investing in a natural gas or tankless water heater or investing in "green" water heating technology such as a solar water heater or a heat pump water heater instead.

The Definition Of A Discrete Variable

Variables, in the simplest of terms, are a measurement defined by a number. Variables can be either discrete or continuous, depending on the nature of what is being measured. It is important to know whether a variable or a set of variables is discrete or continuous because it will determine how the statistics derived from each can be analyzed.

Limited Values

A discrete variable can only be a number in a finite and countable set of values. For instance, if you are measuring the number of times you get heads when flipping a coin 10 times, you are dealing with a discrete variable, since it is finite and countable.

Difference

While a discrete variable is finite and countable, a continuous variable is one with a range of possibilities. Examples of a continuous variable are time and weight. Unlike a discrete variable, a continuous variable can be infinite and uncountable.

Average

Discrete variables can be used to calculate the average of countable items. For instance, if you wanted to know the average number of touchdowns an NFL team scores each season, add up the total number of touchdowns for each team, which is a discrete variable, and divide by the number of teams.

Quantify

Another use of discrete variable is in surveys in which the surveyor wants to quantify a quality, such as an the opinion of a product. The survey takers would be asked to rate a product with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, with 1 being the lowest quality rating and 5 the highest. The numbers in the ratings are discrete variables because they are finite and countable.

U S Post Office Rules

U.S. Post Office Rules

The rules of the U.S. Post Office are very important for a number of reasons concerning efficiency, quality and security. These rules can range from how large mail should be, to how it is addressed in the United States and abroad and especially who is allowed access to mail that is sent by the U.S. Post Office. Sometimes breaking one of these rules may only mean that your mail is not delivered, but other times it can mean jail time.

Purpose

The purpose of many rules in the U.S. Post Office is to make sure that mail is able to be delivered quickly and efficiently. It is especially important that all letters, cards, postcards and packages are addressed and mailed in the same way now that many of the sorting that the U.S. Post Office does is through the use of machines that automatically recognize and sort addressed mail. Many new rules have been introduced as well with the purpose of heightening security after the anthrax scare in 2001 and other instances of terrorism through the mail system.

Size

Check that your mail does not weigh more than 70 pounds or measure more than a total 130 inches long and high, because otherwise the Post Office will not mail it. Split the package into two or three separate packages if you need to. Make sure that any mail that is less than 1/4-inch thick is rectangular and at least 3 1/2 inches high by 5 inches long. Envelopes work great for meeting these size requirements. Also, postcards must be between a minimum of 3 1/2 inches high by 5 inches long and a maximum of 4 1/4 inches high by 6 inches long.

Addressing

Make sure that you put both the name and address of the intended recipient and your own name and address as a return address somewhere on your mail. If you are using an envelope, then put the recipient's name and address in the center of the front of the envelope, while putting your own name and address in the top left corner of the envelope. If you are sending a package, attach a white sheet of paper to one of the sides and print the information in the same positions as you would with an envelope. Make sure that you pay for the postage by either putting a stamp of the appropriate value on your envelope or card, or by paying for the postage at the local post office.

International

If you are sending mail internationally, the rules can change depending on what country you are sending mail to. Some countries, such as Canada, have implemented their own strict security rules in reaction to recent terrorist tactics. Make sure that you use all upper-case letters, print the names of the city and country in English even if you also write them in a foreign language right next to them. Clearly put the words "AIR MAIL" on an outside envelope or above the address on a package.

Tampering

Tampering with the mail is a federal offense and can lead to 6 months in jail along with a $500 fine. This includes anything from stealing mail and opening mail to even damaging mail by anyone who is not the sender or the intended recipient of the mail. If anyone is suspected of tampering with the mail, people can call the U.S. Post Office and postal inspectors will be sent to investigate.

What Landforms Does Running Water Create

More than half of American homes are at risk of flood damage.

Running water is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. Floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina ravaged Southern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and parts of Texas in 2005. The Colorado River carved the majestic Grand Canyon. Thousands of homes each year in the United States are destroyed by floodwaters from rising rivers. Given these and other examples, it isn't surprising that many of the land formations that we see on a regular basis are shaped by running water.

Canyons

The sheer walls and high cliffs of the Grand Canyon were created by the Colorado River.

Canyons are some of the most immediately recognizable formations created from water. Rivers that are elevated above their inlets in lakes or the ocean exert force on the land, resulting in erosion. The higher the river is above the land, the greater force the river exerts. When the river reaches what is called the baseline elevation, which is the elevation at which the river matches the elevation of the inlet, the erosion slows. By that time, the river has worn a groove in the land known as a canyon. How deep the groove cuts into the land is determined by how high the river was flowing above the inlet.

Deltas

Deltas are masses of land created by sediment accumulation at the mouths of rivers. These deltas can be created where a river empties into an ocean, a sea, a lake, or even an area of arid land. The sediment is deposited when the fast flow of the river is slowed by the relatively slow movement of the body of water where the river enters. The difference in flow causes sediments to sink. Eventually the sediment accumulates and a landmass is formed.

Glaciers

Scientists measure the mass of glaciers to determine the health of the ecosystem in arctic areas.

Glaciers are rivers of ice that move slowly down a drainage path, carving out valleys and rock formations as they go. Ten percent of the land worldwide is covered by glaciers, and 75 percent of the world's freshwater is contained in glaciers. Past glaciers from ice ages carved out several well-known bodies of water today, such as the Great Lakes, and they continue to shape the land today with their slow movement.

Chemical Weathering

Chemical weathering is still apparent today in Carlsbad Caverns, when dripping water erodes tunnels and chambers,

Chemical weathering happens when chemicals from flowing water settle into cracks and erode the rock. How the weathering happens depends on the makeup of the soil, as well as the mineral content of the water. One example of a landform created by this process is Carlsbad Caverns. Carlsbad Caverns were created when running water encountered hydrogen sulfide gas from underneath the Earth's surface. The acid gradually ate away the limestone bedrock, creating the massive caverns that exist today under the Eastern New Mexico desert.

The Pros Of Rain

Rain is essential for human, animal and plant life.

Rainfall is a significant part of the Earth's water cycle. When clouds in the sky fill up with condensation, precipitation -- most commonly in the form of rain -- is discharged from the clouds and falls to the ground. This process benefits all living things on Earth because the water from the rain is necessary for life.

Humans, Animals and Plants

Humans, animals and plants rely on rainfall for sustainability. Living things depend on water to survive, and when it rains the cyclical process of renewing the water supply on Earth continues. Droughts, or long periods of time without rainfall, pose dangerous threats to human, animal and plant life, since the absence of water causes living things to become thirsty and dehydrated. In arid lands where water is not accessible, rain becomes all the more critical.

Crops

Crop growth not only supplies humans with foods to eat, but it also helps farmers earn a living. Rain is the magic ingredient that helps crops grow so that they can be gathered, sold and used for food. While many farms have irrigation systems in place to provide a steady amount of water to the crops, not all agricultural areas have the means or resources to install irrigation systems, and thus rely strictly on rainfall to help their crops grow.

Hydroelectric Power

Hydroelectric power is a renewable energy source that relies on water from rain to provide electricity to businesses and homes. When rain water is collected and stored behind dams, the controlled release of this water drives turbines at hydroelectric plants, producing electricity. Rain water, then, is necessary to allow green energy solutions to work effectively, so that hydroelectric plants can continue generating clean electricity.

Groundwater Storage

As rain falls to the ground, storage systems are in place to hold the water for emergency uses. Water reserves become necessary when droughts are anticipated, or in case there is a problem with the delivery systems, and homes and businesses cannot get a direct water supply. Rain is thus the essential element for making sure that the storage units and aquifers are full of water.

Ultimate Cutting Diet

Cutting diets are typically used by bodybuilders to prepare for a competition. Many recreational diet and fitness fans are using these same techniques to achieve leaner more defined physiques.

Types

Many bodybuilders claim to have the ultimate cutting diet. There is no single diet that is the most popular or the best researched. Most are created through trial and error by professional bodybuilders and are specific to their own body types and caloric needs.

Function

Cutting diets followed by bodybuilders are designed to promote fat loss while maintaining muscle. Bodybuilders follow these extreme regimens in the weeks leading up to a competition with the purpose of getting their body fat percentage as low as possible.

Features

All cutting diets promote multiple small meals per day, a high percentage of protein, low carbohydrates and heart-healthy fat.

Protein

Protein is generally recommended in quantities of 1.5 to 2 grams per pound of lean mass. Lean mass is your total weight less your pounds of body fat.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are recommended as roughly 20 to 40 percent of calories and only in the form of fruits, vegetables and whole grains such as rice and oatmeal.

Water Balance

Water consumption is important as well as limited sodium intake to prevent bloating, although opinions on the method for this vary widely.

What Is A Booster Heater

Booster heaters save energy with hot water used for cleaning utensils.

Hot water can envelope bathers in soothing liquid and clean dishes of dirt, as well as disinfect them from germs. While bathing works with lower temperatures, cleaning dishes requires at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit for the best results. However, setting a home water heater to that temperature increases energy costs. Booster heaters can perform the same function with less waste. Does this Spark an idea?

Description

Booster heaters are instant water heaters that increase the temperature of water intended for a specific purpose, such as washing dishes. They can exist as stand-alone units or more commonly in the home as part of cleaning devices like dishwashers. Depending on the device, booster heaters can come on automatically when needed by the cleaning cycle or may need to be turned on and off by the user. Booster heaters save energy by enabling homeowners to reduce the temperature and energy use on their main heating units, while still allowing high heat when necessary for cleaning.

Requirements

Different jurisdictions have slightly different requirements for booster heaters, but the ones provided by San Diego County show a useful example. When used with a machine for washing dishes or other sanitation purpose, the heater must raise water up to 180 degrees for the final sanitizing rinse cycle. When installed as a separate unit below a drainboard, it must be at least six inches above the floor and away from the well. It must remain easily accessible for cleaning and servicing.

Dishwashers

Using a dishwasher requires 37 percent less water than washing dishes by hand, according to the California Energy Commission. To keep your home water heater at the energy-saving temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, look for a dishwasher with a booster heater than can raise incoming water to at least 140 degrees. This higher temperature not only kills germs more effectively but melts dishwasher soap and cleans grease off plates. Another energy-saving tip is to use short wash cycles for everything but the dirtiest dishware. This also shortens use of the booster heater.

Stand-Alone

Due to the high cost of stand-alone booster heaters, they are typically only practical for commercial concerns where several loads of dishes are washed constantly throughout the day. The higher capacities not only sanitize dishware to mandated health standards but can efficiently remove residue such as orange pulp, sticky sauces and lipstick. Compact units that hold as little as six to eight gallons are available for kitchens where space is tight. Although these units are totally enclosed for safety reasons, they typically have removable front panels for easy cleaning and servicing.

What Kind Of Shoes Should People With Osteoarthritis Wear

What Kind of Shoes Should People With Osteoarthritis Wear?

The condition of osteoarthritis only gets worse over time, so it is important to learn ways to manage it or limit its impact on daily activities. Wearing special shoes can help those with knee osteoarthritis to reduce their pain when walking.

Osteoarthritis

Degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis, occurs because the cartilage in the joint wears down. This process of cartilage wearing down occurs over time and can affect any joint within the body, including the knees. While osteoarthritis cannot be cured, it can be treated so that pain is reduced and physical activity remains an option, according to the Mayo Clinic. Therefore, one of the ways to treat this most common arthritic condition-of the knees, at least-is to wear a certain type of shoe.

Significance

Women are twice as likely as men to get osteoarthritis of the knee, according to a study by the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School (May 1998). And women who wear high-heeled shoes are increasing that likelihood because high-heeled shoes cause more force to occur in the leg's knee joint. This additional force to the patellofemoral and medial compartment-where osteoarthritis knee degeneration usually occurs-is 23 percent greater when high heels are worn versus going barefoot.

Shoe Considerations

The Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine at the University of Melbourne published research findings in March of 2009-in PubMed.gov-which support that certain types of shoes help reduce knee movement of the medial compartment of the knee. Medial compartment load (force) that occurs in some knee movements, like walking in high heels, can contribute to osteoarthritis degeneration.

The Centre's findings showed that shoes that have a low heel (or no heel at all)-and are flexible (bend, rather than restrict movement)-are more favorable than shoes with higher heels and less flexibility for osteoarthritis sufferers.

Shoe Types

On-the-shelf shoes sold in retail stores generally only offer a flat-type surface on the bottom of the shoe. But individuals suffering from knee osteoarthritis can benefit from shoes that have bottom surfaces that are uneven, if designed specifically for those with knee osteoarthritis.

The APOS System shoes are one example. These shoes, which resemble a roller skate from the side, uses a wedge system that helps reduce pain and increase mobility for those with knee osteoarthritis.

Misconceptions

Having knee osteoarthritis doesn't mean that an individual needs to seek out flat surfaces in order to avoid knee complications, falls or additional degeneration. Instead, it means that certain movements can create a faster degeneration of the cartilage in the knee than other movements. Therefore, avoiding those types of movements (like when walking in high-heels or tight shoes) is what should be avoided.

Insoles

In addition to certain types of shoes helping with knee osteoarthritis, special shoe insoles are also helpful. Wedged insoles made specifically for those with knee osteoarthritis can provide the support needed to encourage movement (or limit it) within the shoe that is beneficial to those with knee osteoarthritis.
