Uses For Duct Tape

Duct tape is a strong, durable material made with rubber-based material backed by fabric and adhesive. It is easily ripped for ease of use but holds very strongly once it is applied. Duct tape comes in a variety of colors to hide repairs. Duct tape is used in households all over the country for multiple repairs and other applications. There are almost always new uses being developed for duct tape by consumers and manufacturers. Does this Spark an idea?

History Of Uses

Duct tape was originally used to create a waterproof covering for ammunition cases during World War II. The water-repelling abilities and duck cloth used to make the tape led to the name "duck tape." The tape was named "duct tape" after the war because in homes, the primary use for duct tape was to seal heating and air conditioning ducts. The color was also changed after the war from army green to silver to match the color of the ducts in homes.

Modern Uses In General Home Repair

Homeowners and handymen use duct tape for more than just ducts. The tape has been used to temporarily patch holes in many household surfaces and items. The strong hold of duct tape will cover the holes until a proper repair can be completed. Some examples are holes in upholstery, holes in walls, leaky pipes and damaged floor tiles. Duct tape can also serve as a permanent solution for common problems in homes, including taping electronic wires together and out of the way, kitchen cupboard lining and securing the air hose from a clothes dryer to the vent hole.

Crafting Uses

Duct tape is even used for crafts. As the tape is available in many colors and designs, it is often used to create accessories or to decorate ordinary items. One example of an accessory is a belt made completely from duct tape. One of the manufacturers of the tape has a website devoted to making objects with the their product. Handbags and wallets are also made from duct tape. Ordinary items, such as books, journals and folders can be covered in duct tape both for protection and decoration.

Automotive Uses

Duct tape is a handy tool for the car. Duct tape can temporarily hold a crack in a windshield until it can be repaired or replaced. Duct tape can also stop the leaks in coolant hoses or containers until the car can be serviced. Although most of the fixes on vehicles with duct tape are temporary, there are some permanent or long-term fixes that are acceptable. If the interior of the vehicle is damaged, duct tape can be used to patch dashboards or upholstery.

Packing Uses

Duct tape is used for sealing and labeling moving boxes. Duct tape is often chosen over packing tape because of its ability to be ripped, rather than needing scissors to be cut. The cloth fibers in the tape allow the tape to be ripped into straight pieces. A rip in packing tape could run lengthwise, causing the tape to be split in half lengthwise. The surface of duct tape makes it easy to write on with permanent markers for easy labeling.
