What to Wear to Run in Fall and Winter
Running provides much more than just exercise for the seasoned runner. Changes in weather won't prevent many runners from enjoying this outdoor experience. But when you go out in colder, wetter weather, you need to consider some slight changes while suiting up. Being prepared is the best way to continue your enjoyment of running.
Core Layer
Keeping your core warm and dry is very important when going outside during the fall and winter, whether you are running or not. Any clothing that lies against the skin should be tight, and made of synthetic, moisture-repelling material. If you wear cotton, it will absorb your sweat and keep the moisture next to your skin, causing you to lose body heat. This is a scenario that you want to avoid in colder temperatures.
Inner and Outer Layer
Wearing layers is highly recommended during cold weather. An outer layer protects your body against the elements, especially if it is windy, raining or the temperature is below 40 degrees. This layer should be water-resistant with ventilation. If the temperature drops below freezing, keep your body warm with a long-sleeved inner layer. Fleece is a good insulator for this. Zippers on both of these layers make it easy to adjust to a comfortable temperature.
Head and Finger Protection
Protect against heat loss from your head by wearing a hat. Wearing gloves will keep your fingers warm. This is a good idea just in case you have to tie your shoes or pick something up while you are out. Choose a material that is lightweight, warm and will not absorb sweat or moisture.
Footwear
Dry socks are highly desirable in these weather conditions. If you can find water-resistant material, it will make the experience more pleasant. Your regular choice of running shoes can be used throughout the year. Make sure they are supportive, sturdy and have shock-absorbing soles.
