What Is Nike Drifit Technology

Nike Dri-FIT garments are designed to absorb moisture and keep you cool.

Nike Dri-FIT technology is the science behind the moisture-absorbing line of fabrics used by Nike to make athletic apparel. The Nike company creates a variety of athletic garments for specific purposes, and Dri-FIT garments in particular are created to be cool, breathable, and wick moisture away from the body.

Identification

The Nike, Inc. company is known for developing innovative athletic footwear and apparel. The Nike Dri-FIT fabrics are part of a group of FIT fabrics developed by Nike to each serve a specific function. The FIT brand stands for "Functional Innovative Technology." Nike Dri-FIT is light and breathable for enhanced sweat dissipation. Nike Therma-FIT fabrics retain heat. Nike Clima-FIT fabrics resist rain and other elements, and Nike Storm-FIT repels rain, wind and snow.

Function

Nike Dri-FIT is a type of fabric used by the Nike company to create breathable athletic wear. The Dri-FIT fabric aids in moisture management by moving perspiration from the skin to the outside of the fabric for rapid evaporation. As moisture is produced by the body, it moves through the Dri-FIT hydrophobic layer of fabric, which acts as a pump to move the moisture to the outer surface. The synthetic Nike Dri-FIT fabric is both light, breathable and comfortable, and holds in warmth while repelling moisture. Nike Dri-FIT garments are usually made of polyester, spandex and nylon blends. Dri-FIT clothes are commonly used in sports where you may be sweating for long periods of time and want to stay drier, such as long-distance running, tennis and golf.

Types

Nike sells a variety of garments made with Dri-FIT fabrics. Nike manufactures Dri-FIT athletic wear for both men and women, with items including athletic pants, tops, socks, hats, gloves, headbands and knee pads. Some Nike Dri-FIT apparel can also be customized on the Nike website.

Prestige

The Nike company often sponsors famous athletes and sports teams. As a result, Dri-FIT garments have been worn by a number of famous athletes, including Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, and Tiger Woods. In 2007, Nike designed uniforms for the Brazilian football team using Dri-FIT technology. Similarly, Nike designed uniforms with Dri-FIT fabric for Chinese athletes to wear during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Care

Nike Dri-FIT garments should be washed in cold water using liquid detergent. After washing, Dri-FIT garments should be hung to dry. Using the incorrect detergent or machine drying the garment can reduce the effectiveness of the Dri-FIT technology. Often times, people have trouble removing sweat odor from Dri-FIT garments. To solve this problem, use Win detergent, which is a type of detergent specially formulated to clean athletic gear without degrading the water absorbing properties. Do not dry clean or bleach Dri-FIT clothing.
