Rain is essential for human, animal and plant life.
Rainfall is a significant part of the Earth's water cycle. When clouds in the sky fill up with condensation, precipitation -- most commonly in the form of rain -- is discharged from the clouds and falls to the ground. This process benefits all living things on Earth because the water from the rain is necessary for life.
Humans, Animals and Plants
Humans, animals and plants rely on rainfall for sustainability. Living things depend on water to survive, and when it rains the cyclical process of renewing the water supply on Earth continues. Droughts, or long periods of time without rainfall, pose dangerous threats to human, animal and plant life, since the absence of water causes living things to become thirsty and dehydrated. In arid lands where water is not accessible, rain becomes all the more critical.
Crops
Crop growth not only supplies humans with foods to eat, but it also helps farmers earn a living. Rain is the magic ingredient that helps crops grow so that they can be gathered, sold and used for food. While many farms have irrigation systems in place to provide a steady amount of water to the crops, not all agricultural areas have the means or resources to install irrigation systems, and thus rely strictly on rainfall to help their crops grow.
Hydroelectric Power
Hydroelectric power is a renewable energy source that relies on water from rain to provide electricity to businesses and homes. When rain water is collected and stored behind dams, the controlled release of this water drives turbines at hydroelectric plants, producing electricity. Rain water, then, is necessary to allow green energy solutions to work effectively, so that hydroelectric plants can continue generating clean electricity.
Groundwater Storage
As rain falls to the ground, storage systems are in place to hold the water for emergency uses. Water reserves become necessary when droughts are anticipated, or in case there is a problem with the delivery systems, and homes and businesses cannot get a direct water supply. Rain is thus the essential element for making sure that the storage units and aquifers are full of water.
