Workout Music Suggestions

For some, music is a critical part of a workout, helping to set the pace with a beat or rhythm and keeping up motivation while combating monotony. There are as many choices for music as there are songs. Music is a very personal enjoyment choice. You'll want to find music that suits your personal ear. But there are some types of music that have proven particularly good as workout companions.


Hip-Hop Hooray


Hip-hop music with its strong, beats-dominated song-speak and intricate rhythms can be heart-poundingly good workout music. Drums are a primary instrument in hip-hop music and the beat often is 16 beats per music measure as opposed to eight which is considered relatively fast by traditional tempo standards.


Some hip-hop lyrics are delivered at such a blazingly fast speed, they might be hard to understand what's being said or sung. But lyrics aside, hip-hop will get you moving for your aerobic workouts.


Rhythm and Beats


There are a number of other rhythmic music forms that are great for working out. The category known as pop music contain songs popular among the largest segment of the music buying public.


Pop music is great for your exercise soundtrack. This music get tons of radio air play, so even when you're not actually exercising, hearing a favorite exercise tune will remind you to exercise or celebrate your commitment to exercise.


Rhythm and blues makes for fine workout music, too. There are a lot of ballads in R&B, but there also are lot of fast-paced rhythmic songs that are great for exercise. R&B music often features strong woodwind instruments such as horns and saxophones whose measured contribution to the rhythm of a song can provide good beats for an exercise routine.


Try a compilation of R&B from decades like the magical music of the 1960s with groups like the Temptations, Steve Wonder in the '70s or the Average White Band or the Ohio Players in the '80s.


Go Zen


Even yoga is sometimes better when done to music. In a class, you're at the musical whims of an instructor, but when doing yoga at home, you can find zen your own way. Look for soothing instrumental-only music with slow rhythm and soothing instruments like synthesizers or flutes to create the personalized ambience you'll need when attempting a warrior pose.
