The goal of many athletes is to compete in an Ironman triathlon. The Ironman is seen by many to be the pinnacle of triathlon participation. It is a great accomplishment to complete an Ironman triathlon.
History
The first Ironman triathlon was held in Oahu, Hawaii, in 1979. The first male winner was John Collins. The first female winner was Lyn Lemaire.
Identification
To qualify to be an Ironman triathlon, the race must have a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a marathon length (26.2 mile) run.
Size
The first Ironman attracted 50 participants. Ironman triathlons have been steadily gaining popularity ever since. There are now 21 Ironman races held all over the world that lead up to the championship in Kona, Hawaii.
Considerations
Anyone can enter an Ironman triathlon, but most must qualify to go to the championship in Kona. Some do get in by lottery, but most qualify at one of the other Ironman races held during the year leading up to Kona.
Benefits
There are many benefits to being an Ironman triathlete. Triathlon training is well rounded; it develops the entire muscular and cardiovascular system for a well-balanced, healthy physique.
