What Do Compression Shorts Do

Compression shorts are a kind of underwear often worn by men under other athletic gear and in place of boxer briefs. They can also be outerwear; tight biking shorts for men and women are compression shorts. Like sports bras for women, compression shorts keep men from experiencing the effects of too much movement during athletic activity. Compression shorts replace jock straps, but that's not their only benefit.

Chafing Prevention

Compression shorts prevent the groin and legs from rubbing against each other, thus reducing chafing in that area.

Ventilation

Synthetic fabrics used in compression shorts keep the wearer dry and prevent chafing and rashes. Sweat is wicked away quickly.

Warmth

The same fabrics keep the wearer's muscles warm, which helps prevent injury.

Pain Relief

Compression shorts can reduce the pain of sciatica during use. Athletes may wear compression shorts to relieve pain in their hips or hamstrings as well.

Performance

Some athletes feel the compression provided by the shorts helps their speed and strength by reducing fatigue.
