What Causes Feet To Go Numb While Running

What Causes Feet to Go Numb While Running?

While numbness during running comes down to one basic cause--an affected nerve in the foot--the reasons behind the nerve becoming compressed, crowded or irritated can vary greatly.

Shoes

A poorly fitting shoe can hug the foot in the wrong way or the wrong places. Even if it feels fine during normal walking, the foot moves differently during a run.

Laces

Tight laces trap fluids, causing swelling and can press on nerves. Loosen your laces, wear a thinner sock or adjust any inserts to provide a better fit for the foot inside your shoe.

Nerve Compression

In the pounding effort of a run, your weight may fall directly onto a nerve or the spot where the nerve crosses bone, trapping it between body weight and the ground.

Swelling

Swelling can occur as fluids accumulate in the lower limbs during the effort of strenuous exercise. This fluid presses on surrounding tissue, and the pressure can bring about numbness.

Disease

Illness may cause poor circulation, abnormal growth, fluid imbalance or other problems that can lead to pressure, nerve compression or nerve irritation. See your physician if a problem persists, as running may not be the true cause of the numbness.
