What Kind Of Shoes Are Good For Flat Feet

Do You Have Flat Feet?

Millions of Americans are born with a common foot deformity---flat feet. Orthopedic surgeon and inventor Dr. Michael Pryce says people with flat feet should wear shoes that provide stability. Foot instability makes pronation (foot rolling inward) problems worse.

Choosing Shoes

Dr. Pryce says the best shoes for flat feet are shoes that are straight lasted. According to Run the Planet, lasts are wooden models of feet, representing the shapes and arch types of the differing shoe sizes.

Shoe Inspection

Choosing the right shoes is vital. Dr. Pryce says a shoe's tread should rest flat on a level surface, and the shoes should not be able to rock from side to side.

Arch Supports

Overpronation causes people with flat feet to have pain in their hips, legs, knees, ankles and arches. Dr. Pryce says many believe arch supports can help, but they don't.

Shoe Size

Some people develop flat feet as they get older. Their feet lengthen and spread, which means they have to get longer and wider shoes.

Wear and Tear

People with flat feet have abnormal shoe wear. They tend to break down the inside wall of the heel counter of shoes and the outsoles or tread.
