What Shoes To Buy For Flat Feet

What Shoes to Buy for Flat Feet

Flat foot occurs when the arches of the foot don't develop correctly during childhood, according to the Mayo Clinic. This condition can also occur during pregnancy or as part of the aging process. Symptoms of flat foot may include pain in the lower leg, pain in the ankle or uneven wearing of shoes. Fortunately, people with flat feet can use any regular pair of shoes and insert orthotics and special wedges to treat the condition.

Foot Orthotics

Foot orthotics are designed specifically for the patient's foot, according to the Mayo Clinic. The orthotics can fit into any regular pair of shoes, which allows for proper support of the foot. There are three types of orthotics, including soft, semi-rigid and soft. Your doctor will look at the shape of your foot and decide which is right for you.

Shoe Wedges

People with flat feet can experience tendonitis in the feet. For these cases, a wedge needs to be inserted inside the shoe to reduce the pressure on the tendons. These shoe wedges can be purchased at your doctor's office or at a pharmacy.

Walking Boots

For serious cases of flat feet, which also include severe tendonitis in the foot, special "walking boots" may be required. These walking boots are custom designed for your feet. When worn, they reduce inflammation in the tendons and reduce pain in the foot and ankle.

Another option (besides a walking boot) is an ankle brace. If the brace reduces your pain, the special boot may not be needed.

When to Call a Doctor

Having flat feet can affect other parts of your body, according to the Mayo Clinic. Contact your doctor if you have pain in your knees, hips or ankles. Shin splints and arthritis in the foot are common complications of this health issue. With the right arch support, however, these problems may be avoided.
