Bluefin
Bluefin, also known as the giant tuna, return to the Gulf of Mexico to spawn in December and January. Yellowfin
Yellowfin, also known as ahi, occur cyclically in the Gulf of Mexico. On average they weigh 80 lbs. but have been known to grow up to 400 lbs. They are exceptionally fast swimmers and are sought by anglers because of the intense fight they give once hooked. They tend to move in social groups near the surface and away from deep water. They are fished commercially and used for sushi but are not considered to be overfished.
Tuna Fishing Policies
If you are fishing strictly as a leisure activity, most charter tour operators will encourage you to release the fish after the thrill of the catch and you have taken photos of your prize. You will have to act quickly to get the fish back in the water before its breathing becomes strained. Some charter companies have strict catch and release polices. Choosing to indulge in your catch is permitted for tuna and in this case you will find local restaurants happy to cooperate by cooking it once you return to shore. Tuna is a highly oily fish and makes excellent steaks for grilling or broiling.
Location
Mazatlan is one of the favorite coastal resort areas on the Gulf of Mexico with abundant tuna available throughout the year. Puerto Vallarta is renowned for its exciting off-shore deep-sea fishing expeditions. The ocean here is very fertile, with plenty of tuna in every season. Costalegre, just south of Puerto Vallara, offers fishing havens like none other, with excellent on- and offshore angling for giant bluefin tuna. Zihuatanejo hosts several important fishing tournaments, attracting anglers in search of the region's prolific yellowfin tuna. Acapulco is popular for day trips in view of the city's main square. Tuna is a regular catch on this part of the coast. Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are ideal for both lagoon and deep-sea fishing. Bluefin tuna are available, especially during April and May.
