If you aspire to become a limousine driver in the state of Florida, it is important to understand the various components that go into making that goal a reality. Because a limousine driver is driving for a commercial business, it is required by Florida state law that she obtains a commercial driver's license. Specifically, the state requires that a limo driver have a Class C Commercial Driver's License.
General Information
In order to become a limo driver in the state of Florida, you must be at least 18 years of age and a valid citizen of the United States. More specifically, you must be 18 years of age to drive on intrastate roads and 21 years of age to drive on interstate roads. Most limousine companies will require you to be at least 21 to avoid any legal conflicts with specific trips.
Licensing Information
You will be required to hold a Class C Commercial Driver's License. By law, a Class C commercial driver's license allows you to operate a commercial vehicle that can hold up to 15 people and has a maximum weight of 26,000 pounds (which fits the classification of a limousine).
Written Test
The written examination will cover all of the information included in the Commercial Driver License Manual. To pick up a copy of the manual, head to local Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles office and ask at the front desk. Once you meet the general requirements listed above and have adequately studied, schedule a test at a local DHSMV office. To pass the exam, you must get at least 80 percent of the questions correct.
Road Test
Once you pass the written exam, you are eligible to take a road test. The road test will consist of three parts. The first is a general inspection of the vehicle you will be driving where you will explain to the instructor what you are checking for and why. The second aspect of the test will gauge how safely and adequately you control the vehicle while traversing through a series of cones and traffic signals on a course. The third aspect will test how well you maneuver the vehicle in regular traffic and how well you adhere to instructions and the various elements of the road (including speed limits, traffic signs, pedestrians, etc). If you pass the road test, you have passed your licensing test and are eligible to work as a limousine driver in the state of Florida. While the road test does not have to be taken in a limousine, it does have to be taken in a vehicle that requires a Class C Commercial license to drive.
