What Are The Benefits Of Sprints For Weight Loss

Running is a great exercise for weight loss since it burns so many calories. Sprinting is an effective running workout that burns many calories and increases speed.

Sprinting

Sprinting is an all out effort that is sustainable for only a very short period. You can't sprint for minutes--a sprint can last no longer than 30 seconds.

Resting

Between sprints you will need a recovery time of at least the same amount of time that you sprinted. For example, if you sprinted for 30 seconds, you recover for at least 30 seconds.

Creating a Sprint Workout

To warm up, walk for five minutes. Then sprint, running as fast as possible. Recover by walking for at least as long as you sprinted, but no more than three times that amount. Repeat the sprint and recovery cycles six to eight times. Cool down for five minutes by walking.

Benefits

Sprint workouts are a form of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). HIIT workouts have been proven to increase resting metabolic rates for up to 24 hours after the workout.

Warnings

Sprints aren't for those new to exercising or recovering from an injury. Consult with your doctor before beginning sprints if you have any type of long-term illness.

To sprint safely, you should have good quality running shoes to protect both your feet and your joints from excess stress.
