What Is A Nominal Number

A nominal number is a number used as an identifier or a name.

A nominal number is a number used to identify something, or to give it a name. It is not used to give something a value (cardinal) or a position (ordinal). Below are examples of uses of nominal numbers.

Number on Team Jersey

An everyday use of a nominal number appears on team jerseys. The number on the back or front of the jersey serves to identify the player.

Postal Code

In the United States, postal codes are typically expressed as five-digit numbers. For example, the postal code for Six Flags Magic Mountain Park in Valencia, California, is 91355. The postal code serves as a means of expressing where a letter needs to be sent.

Road Numbers

Roads and highways all over the world are identified by numbers. Highway numbers not only allow you to find your way, they also sometimes tell you in which direction they are laid. In the United States all even highway numbers run east-west, and odd highway numbers run north-south.

Flight Numbers

Airlines routinely use flight numbers to identify the route. In the U.S. and Canada, odd numbers identify westbound flights, and even numbers identify eastbound flights.
