Couples work together during childbirth classes.
Childbirth classes are a way for expectant parents to prepare for labor and delivery. Having a baby can be challenging and overwhelming. Taking childbirth education classes can help the process of childbirth seem less frightening. Even moms that have already had one or more children often find that childbirth classes help refresh their memories and make them feel prepared.
Learning About Labor
During childbirth classes, the process of labor is explained, including what signs to watch for and what exactly is happening to the body as a baby is about to be born. Couples taking classes learn different methods for pain management and interact with each other as a way of coping with discomfort and fatigue. Specific types of birth are reviewed, such as vaginal delivery and C-section.
Pain Management Methods
Two pain management methods that are often taught in childbirth education classes are Lamaze and The Bradley Method. Lamaze teaches various ways of coping during labor, such as focused breathing, massage and positioning. The Bradley Method is a method of natural childbirth for women who have no complications in their pregnancy. Diet and exercise are emphasized throughout pregnancy, and deep breathing is used during labor. During childbirth classes, the role of the partner or coach is explained, and couples do exercises to practice focused breathing or other pain relief methods.
Complications
All couples expecting a baby hope that things will go smoothly and there will be no complications. Unfortunately, sometimes unexpected events occur. Childbirth education includes information about possible complications and what medical interventions may occur. Topics covered may include emergency home birth, breech birth and preterm labor and delivery.
Other Information
A variety of information may be offered in different classes. Childbirth classes are typically offered around the sixth month of pregnancy. Couples may be offered a tour of the hospital facility to learn about different types of equipment, as well as basic information, such as where to park and where to report on delivery day. Other information that might be covered during childbirth classes includes what to pack to bring to the hospital, postpartum care, newborn care and breastfeeding. Childbirth education may be available on DVD, but a classroom setting allows couples to ask questions and practice techniques under the supervision of a trained professional. Ideally, classes are small, consisting of about 10 couples, to encourage interaction and mutual support among participants.
