Volunteer Coordinator Position Description

Volunteer coordinators recruit volunteers to help with the organization's goals, and they make sure all events that need volunteers are covered. Often a volunteer coordinator job is part-time or includes another main job requirement, such as coordinating special events.

Employers

Volunteer coordinators work for businesses and organizations that need a significant number of volunteers. These include hospitals and other health care facilities, animal shelters, museums, social service agencies, environmental groups and more.

New Volunteers

The position description includes recruiting new volunteers through community outreach and free advertising opportunities. Volunteer coordinators interview applicants and train new volunteers.

Scheduling

Creating and filling schedules for organizational needs is a primary part of the coordinator's job duties. She contacts volunteers regarding available opportunities and may hold monthly volunteer meetings to discuss upcoming events and ongoing activities.

Events

Volunteer coordinators make sure coverage is provided for special events and typically attend those events. For large events, they may create separate committees. They also schedule volunteers to represent the organization at expos, seminars and other community programs.

Tracking Activity

These coordinators maintain a volunteer database and keep track of individual volunteer activities. They reward volunteers for special achievements with thank-you notes and items such as gift certificates for lunch at a local restaurant.

Writing Duties

Publishing monthly or quarterly newsletters detailing volunteer activities and recognizing certain volunteers is part of the coordinator's job. They also write reports for management, recommending changes that would help the program.
