Track events take place year-round in New York state.
Track and field athletes in New York state compete year-round at every level. High school and amateur athletes have opportunities to compete in indoor and outdoor events around the state. Some events draw top college and international athletes. Facilities range from New York City's Armory to university indoor tracks and facilities in the upstate region.
Empire State Summer Games
The Empire State Summer Games is a multi-sport annual amateur competition for residents of New York. The state-sponsored event is modeled after Olympic competition. Athletes compete in three divisions: scholastic, masters and open. The scholastic competition draws the top high school athletes in the state. Athletes compete in one of six regional tryouts before qualifying for the championships. The full slate of track and field events includes the decathlon and heptathlon. Athletes can register online for tryouts. A separate competition for senior citizens, the Senior Games, takes place in early summer and includes track and field events. Participants must be at least 50 years old.

New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory
The New Balance Collegiate Invitational is a premier winter track and field meet for college athletes. National Collegiate Athletic Association institutions from across the country compete in the indoor event in New York City's Armory, a state-of-the-art facility with one of the fastest tracks in the world. In 2010, athletes broke school and meet records at the event. The Armory also houses the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and hosts the state's high school championships.

Syracuse University Competitions
Syracuse University, a member of the NCAA Division I Big East Conference, begins its indoor track and field season with two invitational tournaments during the winter. The Welcome Back Invitational and the Syracuse Invitational draw teams from universities, colleges and community colleges from upstate New York. The events take place at Manley Field House, the home arena for the school's track and field team. Performance results in the events can be used as qualifying marks for acceptance into the NCAA Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the end of the season.
