There is nothing worse than having a good night's sleep ruined by a painful leg cramp, often called a "charley horse." The cramps can happen day or night and often occur after long periods of physical exertion or after a painful collision. While many people have charley horses, few realize what they really are and that there is more than one type.
Bruise
One type of charley horse occurs after a collision to the leg area that causes a bruise on the muscle that is painful to the touch. The area becomes tender and can result in muscle spasms that can be painful. The pain associated with this type of charley horse can make walking and other actions difficult.
Cramp
Another type of charley horse is created when a muscle, often in the leg or foot, contracts involuntarily and causes great pain. The pain can range from irritating to excruciating, depending on the strength of the contraction.
Physical Exertion
Muscle cramp charley horses are most often caused by physical exertion. The muscles are overworked and after a period of resting may contract.
Other Causes
Muscle cramps can also be a side effect of some medicines or causes by dehydration. Certain diseases such as neuropathy and lateral sclerosis can also cause muscle cramps. If the cramps are persistent or do not go away, contact your doctor.
Treatment
The best treatment to stop a charley horse is to stretch the affected muscle. Since the muscle contracts involuntarily, you must physically manipulate the affected area until the pain subsides. Afterward, massaging the muscle may help keep it from contracting again.
