What Colors To Wear With Brown Hair

When it comes to deciding on what color to wear, your hair color is one of the biggest determining factors. However, brown hair can come in many different shades and is matched with many different skin tones, all of which can affect how colors look on you. So when it comes to deciding which colors might look best on you as a brunette, take your skin tone and the shade of your hair into account, and go with what makes you comfortable.

Cool-Toned Brunettes

If you have fair skin with blue or pink undertones or darker brown hair and lighter eyes, then you are probably a cool-toned brunette. Bright, vivid colors look best on you, like black, white, navy, bright red and bright pink. "Icy" colors such as silver, ice-blue and yellow---anything that is stark and vivid---can look great on you, too. You should avoid pastel colors that will only highlight your undertones, making your coloring muddy, and any earthy beige, orange or brown colors that will wash out your color completely.

Warm-Toned Brunettes

A warm-toned brunette has golden undertones in the skin, dark eyes, and hair that is anywhere from auburn to black-brown to dark blonde. Warm-toned brunettes look best in rich, natural colors, including deep browns, vivid oranges, reds and yellows, and dark olive green. It is suggested that warm-toned brunettes avoid pastels as well as overly bright colors such as black, stark white and anything with blue undertones because they may wash out the coloring of a golden undertone. If you wish to wear a neutral, go for a camel, deep brown or warm grey instead that will highlight your golden undertones.

All Brunettes

Most brunettes can benefit from certain color schemes that highlight the dark color of their hair. Jewel tones are often suggested for brunettes, especially turquoise, crimson red, sapphire blue, violet and lime green. These bright colors often create a great contrast to dark hair, making it seem even richer in color. Certain neutrals can work with almost any skin tone and hair color, such as black, ivory and grey; it is just about finding the right shade for you. Most brunettes should avoid brown-grey, fluorescent colors and most pastels. Use these suggestions as a starting point and be sure to try them out on your own specific hair color and skin tone to see what works best for you.
