What Is A Good Running Speed On The Treadmill

A treadmill is a stationary exercise machine that mimics the motion of running. A good running speed depends on your own experience and limitations.

Considerations

Most treadmills allow you to run from speeds of 1 mph to 10 mph. They allow you to run at a faster rate than you would be able to outside because fewer forces are at play and movement is more fluid. Do not try to push yourself to run faster just because it seems easier.

Pacing

You should pace your treadmill workout. Don't run at the same speed the whole time. Start off slow, build up to a faster pace and slow down several times throughout your workout. Give yourself five minutes of cool down time at the end of your workout.

Features

Use the electronics on your treadmill to measure your speed and adjust the incline. If you are running at a higher incline, you don't need to run as fast to burn the same number of calories.

Progression

Increase your maximum speed over a period of weeks and/or months. You should only start running at faster speeds once you have safely and effectively run at lower speeds for a good period of time.

Warning

Accept your limitations. Only experienced runners should run at speeds of 8 mph and faster. You need to be in great control of your stride. A fall at these speeds can cause serious injury.
