What Is A Good Shoe For Middle Distances

Middle distance runners require shoes with spikes.

There are many types of running shoes that are designed with varying levels of cushion and support, and for use for various distances and terrain. Middle distance shoes are specifically designed for athletic track events ranging from 800 meters to one mile. Characterized by high speeds, the sport demands endurance. Track shoes with spikes help increase the runner's traction. There are several recommended shoes on the market for middle distance runners.

Spike Design

The spikes designed for a middle distance shoe are slightly more flexible than a sprinting spike and are characterized by a small, forefoot spike plate. Before you purchase a pair of middle distance shoes, it's important to inquire about the training surface you'll be using them on, as some tracks don't permit certain types of spikes. Some spikes can be used for jumping as well as running. For example, The Brooks Womens PR MD, which includes six millimeter spikes and a wrench with the shoes, also recommends their product for jumping.

Men's Shoes

There are a variety of middle distance shoes available to accomodate male runners. The Asics Hyper MD 4 is a versatile men's shoe that's ideal for middle distance running, but also for other events such as hurtles and horizontal jumps. A synthetic leather and mesh upper adds breathability and the midsole offers increased support of the arch and heel. To keep the shoe lightweight, Asics created a nylon spike slip plate. Nike's 2012 Zoom Victory shoes feature what Nike claims to be the lightest mid-distance spike ever in production. Improved TPU sharkskin also increases the shoe's sturdiness on the track.

Women's Shoes

Several companies, such as Brooks and Nike, feature track shoes made specifically for women. The Brooks Womens PR MD offers some rigidity, but also features an EVA heel pad that offers increased support throughout the event. The shoe's upper is ventilated with a breathable mesh and the outsole consists of a thin shark skin. Contoured straps hold your foot firmly in place. Nike also offers the Women's Zoom W 3 which features TPU Sharkskin to help increase the grip on the track. Other features include a compression molded Flashlon foam midsole and an advanced lacing system that helps keep the shoe snug to the foot.

Fitting Tips

Track shoes are similar to other running shoes in that they come in a variety of fits. It's important to work with a professional to figure out if you have a neutral foot plant or if you underpronate or are a forefoot striker. It's best to shop for shoes at the end of the day when your foot is the largest and to wear the socks that you plan to use with the shoes. Always try the shoes out first and find shoes that are snug, but allow for natural movement and don't pinch any part of the foot.
