What Is A Tattoo Armband

Tattoo armbands are often colored solid black.

A tattoo armband goes halfway or all the way around your arm. The common placement for armband tattoos is around the upper bicep, but they may be located on the forearm as well. Tattoo shops usually have lots of flash, or sheets of drawings, of armband tattoos hanging on their walls.

Armband Tattoo Placement

Armband tattoos on the upper arm are usually located a few inches beneath the armpit. They may go all the way around the arm or halfway around. If they go halfway around, they sit on the outer arm. The armband may curve along the bicep with lots of peaks and valleys, or it may be straight all the way around. It may have sharp elements that point up toward the upper- or down toward the lower arm.

Armband Tattoo Styles

Two commonly seen armband tattoo styles are barbed wire and tribal. Both are usually solid black. Tribal tattoos are bold and geometric. Although the designs are simple, tribal tattoos take a skilled artist to execute to keep the lines from running together as the tattoo fades. Celtic tattoos, featuring crosses and lots of curved lines, are similarly difficult to execute well. Japanese kanji sometimes circle the arm in armband tattoos. Flowers are another frequent armband element.

Finding a Tattoo Artist

Locating a good tattoo artist is your first order of business if you want a good armband tattoo. Ask others for recommendations or visit tattoo shops near you and look through the artists' portfolios. Talk to the artists about their experience doing armband tattoos and the kinds of designs they enjoy doing. A good artist will listen to your ideas and suggest ways to modify them to create the best tattoo. The shop should be immaculately clean, the artists should be wearing latex gloves and they should have their machines and chairs wrapped in plastic.

Armband Tattoo Procedure

Your tattoo artist will shave the hair off your arm and clean your skin with a substance called green soap. He will outline the tattoo first using a small cluster of needles and a special outlining machine. After the outline is done, the artist will start to fill in your armband tattoo with color with a different machine. After the tattoo is done, he will cover it with a thick layer of petroleum jelly or tattoo ointment and wrap it in plastic wrap.
