The Best Socks For Long Distance Running

Wearing the correct socks can improve the quality of a long run.

Long distance running can be hard on the entire body, but your feet take an extra beating. Wearing reliable, quality socks will keep your feet feeling fresh. The material is one of several things to keep in mind when choosing socks for a long run.

Synthetic Blends

Synthetic blend socks are quick-drying, form-fitting and tough. Nylon and Lycra socks will stay snug on your feet. Thermastat and CoolMax are polyester brands that keep the feet dry and prevent rubbing, which causes blisters.

Wool Blends

Wool blend socks offer many benefits. When blended with synthetics, such as nylon, wool socks maintain their shape and wick sweat away well. Merino wool is the softest wool and will keep your feet warmer than synthetic alone.

Cotton Blends

Wearing baggy cotton socks on a long run will leave your feet aching.

Cotton socks are not recommended for long runs, because pure cotton does not wick away sweat quickly. A cotton synthetic sock will suffice on shorter runs.

Sock Features

When choosing socks for a long run, look for extra padding in the heel and on the ball of the foot. If you experience arch pain, switch to socks that have more elastic around the arch for extra support. Finally, try socks on with your running shoes to make sure they fit.
