Tuna Fishing In Cabo

The Cabo San Lucas saltwater environment is a prolific tuna fishery.

Cabo San Lucas, or Cabo, is a popular center for many deep sea tuna anglers. Just offshore from Cabo are rich feeding grounds for a variety of deep sea species. Seasonally, large numbers of tuna enter these waters to feed.

When to Travel

Cabo has prodigious runs of several tuna species. Of most interest to visiting anglers is the yellowfin tuna. Yellowfin arrive in the seas off Cabo in July with numbers peaking from October to November. Yellowfin are still present in January with numbers decreasing toward the end of the month.

Charters

Cabo San Lucas has a large fishing charter fleet. Generally, smaller boats are cheaper and faster but less comfortable. Larger boats are more spacious and better equipped. A smaller boat of 28 feet in length will cost around $400 for a day. For larger boats of 40 feet and over, expect to pay in the region of $800 per day.

Regulations

Mexican law specifies that all those who wish to fish offshore must be licensed. Most fishing charters provide licenses that are included in the cost of your day; however, it is best to check before departing. A daily license costs $13, with a weekly license costing $30. Prices may vary according to the exchange rate of the day.
