Types Of Running Shoes

It's important to wear proper running shoes when exercising.

Wearing the correct running shoes is imperative to preventing injuries and protecting your arches and feet. Whether you have small arches and need additional support along the base of your foot, or you are flat-footed and need extra cushioning in the heel, running shoes offer these specifications. Before purchasing a pair of running shoes, be sure to know what kind of arch you have--that will help when finding the right shoes.

Motion Control Shoes

Runners with flat feet or low arches tend to run on the outer edges of their feet. A motion control running shoe offers a rigid base that prevents any over excessive rotation. A wider sole and a medial post, which consists of foam pads or layers of plastic, are inserted into the shoe to prevent the rotation from occurring. This added layer is also inserted to decrease the possibility of running injuries. Motion control running shoes allow you to continue running in the same formation as you regularly do, just with added comfort and support in the areas in the feet that typically cause pain or strain.

Stability Shoes

Runners who typically run on the middle or outside area of their heel generally have a normal arch or a medium arch. A stability running shoe offers both cushioning and synthetic overlays that offer additional support. These shoes also provide arch bridges to support the length of the foot and extra cushioning in the middle of the sole for additional durability. Some stability shoes include a medial post that is inserted into the arch of the shoe for added support. Styles of stability running shoes include the K-Swiss Konejo and the Nike Zoom Structure Thax.

Cushioned Running Shoes

It is common to have shin splints and even knee problems from excessive running, if you have high-arched feet. Cushioned running shoes are designed with a flexible cushion that prevents any shocking of the joints when you are pounding on the pavement. Cushion shoes include underfoot support, a cushioned layering around the heel for added support and also a padded cushion along the length of the shoes. Styles of cushion running shoes include the Nike Air Max, the ASICS Gel-Cumulus and the K-Swiss Keahou.
