Typical Heating System Efficiency

Regardless of the type of heating system you have, there are a number of ways to make it more efficient for heating your home and keeping utility costs as low as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Maintenance

Energy Star recommends having your HVAC system tuned up and cleaned by a professional once a year. In the interim, the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy recommends regularly cleaning out air registers and making sure they're not blocked or covered.

Filter

Energy Star recommends changing the filter in your system every month or a minimum of every three months to keep your heating system running efficiently.

Ducts

Energy Star also recommends having your air ducts sealed and insulated by a professional (a step that can improve efficiency by up to 20 percent) and then checked regularly for leaks or problems.

Thermostat

Installing a programmable thermostat can help homeowners that are away from the home consistently to save up to $180 a year on energy costs, according the Energy Star.

Replacement

If your heating system is more than 10 years old, outdated or inefficient despite your efforts, then installing an Energy Star rated system may be a viable option. High-efficiency furnaces that contribute the most savings have an efficiency rating of 90 percent or greater.
