Using A Bamboo Food Steamer

You can use a bamboo steamer to cook a variety of foods.

Bamboo food steamers are cooking vessels made from the sturdy, hollow stems of the tropical bamboo plant. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes to accommodate different amounts and types of food. Many department and cookware stores sell steamers. Does this Spark an idea?

The Concept

Hot steam cooks foods prepared in bamboo steamers. Place the food that requires the longest cooking time on the bottom, and the food that cooks fastest on the top tier. After securing the lid, the bamboo steamer sits atop simmering water in a pan large enough to accommodate the steamer without the water touching the food.

Benefits

Braising, baking or cooking food in water causes the loss of vitamins, such as vitamin B and C. Steaming prevents this and allows the food to retain more of its natural flavors. This method retains the shape and color of the food often compromised by other cooking methods.

Considerations

Bamboo steamers are relatively delicate cookware. They are not microwave-safe or for use in conventional ovens. Foods commonly stick to bamboo, so a light coating of cooking oil on the bamboo is helpful or cooks may line the layers with vegetable leaves to prevent sticking and enhance flavors.
