Things To Do In Nyc At Night

New York City is one of the largest cities in the world, with a population of over 8 million people, according to 2006 statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. While there are a number of activities for tourists during the day and evening in New York City, such as visiting the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and the Empire State Building, there are also many activities for both locals and nonresidents later at night. A number of clubs and bars are open until 1 a.m. or later, for crowds under and over 21.


Under 21


In New York, people do not have to be 21 years old to listen to music, dance and see performances after 10 p.m. There are a number of places that 18-year olds can go to for entertainment, including BAM Café, B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, Blarney Star, Bowery Ballroom, CDBG, Helena's, Postcrypt Coffeehouse and the Sounds of Brazil.


BAM Café is a club that features jazz, spoken word, afro-pop and experimental background music. Located in Times Square, B.B. King Blues Club and Grill has horse-shoe shaped seating around a 30-foot stage, where blues and jazz musicians play. Blarney Star showcases traditional Irish musicians and ensembles every Friday night. Bowery Ballroom is a former shoe store that has live electronica and indie-rock bands. CDBG is a punk and alternative rock club where bands such as the Talking Heads have gotten their starts. Helena's is a tapas bar where salsa, merengue, Latin rock and Cuban music is played at night. Established in 1964, Postcrypt Coffeehouse has amateur, professional and student performances of poetry, comedy and jazz, blues, rock and country music. Sounds of Brazil is a Brazilian music club that plays a variety of styles, including African, Haitian, reggae and South African music.


Over 21 Bars and Clubs


A number of areas in New York City have dance clubs, bars and comedy clubs for people that are over 21 years old. The clubs and bars feature music such as jazz, funk, rock, Latin, 80's, salsa, merengue, hip hop, soul and Brazilian music. There are also late-night spots where people can bowl and play pool. Music venues for people over 21 include 13 Bar, Arthur's Tavern, Blue Note, Don Hill's, Galapagos, K'av'eh'az, Knickerbocker Saloon, Lenox Lounge, One51, the Village Underground, and the West End. Two placdes where people can go to play pool and bowl are the Amsterdam Billiard Club and AMF Chelsea Piers Bowl. Comedy clubs include Caroline's on Broadway, the Comedy Cellar, Dangerfield's and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater.


The 13 Bar is a bar and lounge that features jazz, funk and soul music as well as spoken-word poetry. Arthur's Tavern is club that has been in existence since 1937 and plays jazz, blues and Dixieland jazz music. Located in Greenwich Village, the Blue Note has had acts such as Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn and Stanley Turrentine, and it regularly features up-and-coming jazz, blues, hip hop and funk artists. Don Hill's is a club in Soho where one can hear 80's music, British pop and up-and-coming metal and indie bands. Galapagos is a bar, gallery and performance space in Brooklyn where it is possible to hear live music and see performances and readings. K'av'eh'az is a European-style coffeehouse with live jazz performances. Opened in 1978, the Knickerbocker Saloon has had acts such as Sir Roland Hanna, Earl May and Mulgrew Miller. The Lenox Lounge is a renovated 1930s bar in Harlem where Billie Holliday, Miles Davis and John Coltrane have performed. One51 is a hip hop, funk and reggae dance club that is located in a 1920's opera house. Located in the basement of the former "Gerdes Folk City," Village Underground is a live music venue where celebrities such as Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder sometimes stop in. The West End is a rock bar that draws Columbia University crowds, and it was once a place frequented by Jack Kerouac.


The Amsterdam Billiard Club is a pool hall that attracts celebrities such as Jerry Springfield and Eric Clapton. The AMF Chelsea Piers Bowling Alley is a 40-lane bowling alley and arcade with air hockey and video games. At Caroline's on Broadway, famous comedians, such as Paul Mooney, regularly headline. Dangerfield's features up-and-coming comics, and comedians such as Roseanne Barr and Jerry Seinfeld have filmed HBO specials there. The Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater is a comedy club with improv acts.
