Children will find many entertaining attractions and activities in New York City.
New York City has many activities suitable for children. Some offer discounted or free tickets for children, and many restaurants feature kid's menus. For a calendar of family events in the city, visitors should pick up a free monthly "'New York Family" magazine from a library or major attraction in New York City.
Bronx Zoo
The Congo Gorilla Forest is a popular attraction at the Bronx Zoo.
The Bronx Zoo, home to 4,000 animals representing 600 species, is the world's largest urban zoo. A popular attraction is Jungle World, which features large enclosures that simulate the native habitat of animals. Kids can explore hands-on exhibits at the Children's Zoo and see Siberian tigers at Tiger Mountain. As of 2011, the zoo featured 3-D films that combined with mist, lighting, scents and wind for a full-sensory experience. Children can also see the daily feedings of penguins and sea lions.
Fifth Avenue for Kids
FAO Schwarz is steps from Central Park.
Some children's stores are tucked within the famous boutiques and shops of Fifth Avenue. FAO Schwarz at Fifth Avenue and East 58th Street features rare toys. Kids can design dolls at the Madame Alexander Doll Factory, create their own Muppet at the Muppet Whatnot Workshop, or sit and listen to storybook readings. Children can also visit the soda fountain and FAO Schweetz candy store.
Central Park
Central Park has more than 20 playgrounds, and a carousel with 58 hand-carved horses. The medieval-styled Belvedere Castle hosts original Marionette plays in the Swedish Cottage Theatre. Kids can participate in free basketball clinics from April to October at the North Meadow Recreation Center, or conquer amusement rides at the Victorian Gardens from May to September.
Children's Museums
New York City is home to the Brooklyn Children's Museum, one of the first museums designed especially for children. Like other children's museums in the city, the Children's Museum of the Arts in Lower Manhattan has hands-on, interactive exhibits, as well as puppet-making workshops and singalongs. The museum also has an arts studio for teens (ages 11 to 15), and arts classes that teach children between the ages of 5 and 12 everything from Japanese art to animation.
Sony Wonder Technology Lab
New York has world-class museums, but a lesser known museum is the Sony Wonder Technology Lab. Located in the Sony Tower on Madison Avenue, the free museum teaches children about technology and entertainment through multimedia hands-on exhibits. It also holds workshops covering technology, music, animation and entertainment. The Lab website does recommend reservations be made in advance. While admission is free, admission is not guaranteed. As of 2011, the Lab did not accept same day reservations.
