What Are The Causes Of Postpartum Depression

Post-partum depression is a form of depression that affects some women after they give birth to their children. The Royal College of Psychiatrists states that approximately one in every ten new mothers suffer varying lengths of this disorder. A number of causes are believed to contribute to post-partum depression.

Hormonal Shifts

The hormonal changes that result from delivery may cause post-partum depression. After giving birth, women experience a large drop in the levels of hormones estrogen and progesterone, and their thyroid levels may drop as well.

Physiological Changes

The changes in blood pressure, functioning of the immune system and metabolism that mothers experience after giving birth can also contribute to post-partum depression.

Lifestyle Changes

Post-partum depression can arise as a result of the mother's adjustment to her new role. The sleep deprivation and stress that can result from caring for a new baby can cause some women to develop post-partum depression.

Previous Histories of Depression

Women who have a previous history of depression are more likely to develop post-partum depression.

Stressful Events

Stressful events such as a difficult delivery, prenatal problems or a premature birth can also cause post-partum depression in some women.
