Caffeine intake, such as from a cup of coffee, can have an effect on the heart.
Millions of people consume caffeine on a daily basis, whether in coffee, tea, chocolate or some other form. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), studies of the relation between caffeine and the heart are inconclusive.
Caffeine
Caffeine in some forms can be bad for a person's health; the Food and Drug Administration notes the adverse affects of caffeine additives, but there are varied opinions on naturally occurring caffeine.
Nervous System
According to the AHA, caffeine is known to stimulate the central nervous system.
Kidneys
Caffeine can influence the function of the kidneys, causing the kidneys to work harder and eliminate more fluid. The AHA claims this can easily lead to dehydration.
Heart Rate
Heart rate increases with caffeine; however, there is no direct connection between caffeine intake and heart palpitations or heart symptoms.
Suggestions
Since there are no conclusive results as to the effects of caffeine on the heart, the AHA suggests a normal caffeine intake of one to two cups of coffee per day is relatively safe.
