Why Are My Toes & Feet Numb

Numbness is a loss of feeling in a certain area of the body that can be accompanied by sensations like tingling and burning. The feet and toes are among the most common places to experience numbness.

Causes

Numbness is typically caused by interrupted nerve function. This can be induced by a disruption of blood flow to the area. (Resource 2)

Temperature

If the feet and toes are subjected to cold temperatures, especially cold water or ice, this can significantly slow down blood flow and lead to numbness.

Risk Factors

Poor heart health can lead to numbness due to clogged arteries and inefficient oxygen delivery to the extremities. Obesity and diabetes are two other risk factors.

Footwear

Footwear that does not fit properly or puts uneven pressure on your feet can contribute to foot and toe numbness.

Treatment

Persistent foot numbness or numbness that involves the whole leg may be a sign of a serious underlying condition. It is a good idea to visit a doctor to properly diagnose and treat the problem. (Resource 1).
