Where Buy Titanic Costumes

You want to be a character from the movie Titanic and you "just can't let go" of the idea. But where to find a costume that fits the time period properly? A few creative strategies for finding the right option will make the difference between sink or swim for this costume.

If You Have a Large Budget--Buy a Costume

What girl doesn't want to slip into history by slipping on a dress that is a clear replica of one of Kate Winslet's gowns in the movie Titanic? If you have the budget and the desire to do this, there are an assortment of costume shops as well as websites that offer practically flawless variations on her dresses from the movie (such as the Jump Dress, the Dinner Dress and the Fly Dress), all at rather high prices. Even if you are not trying to achieve a specific look from the movie, generic Edwardian-era dresses tend to be on the pricey side as well due to their intricate details, including beading, and large amounts of fabric. Most styles are available from $200 to $2,000 and up. If you are looking for men's costumes like those in the movie, they are less expensive but certainly not cheap, particularly if you want to go for a full look that includes hat, coat, pocket watch and other items from the era.

If You Have a Medium Budget--Buy a Pattern

Patterns are almost easier than finding an affordable yet authentic-looking costume, but the cost of material and the need to have a knack for sewing often make this a less desirable option. Still, if you know someone who has the time and the skill to sew, a pattern is a great way to go. Numerous Edwardian/Titanic-era dress patterns are available online and in fabric stores and generally sell for $30 and up. Whether you make it out of silk chiffon or burlap is up to you.

If You Have a Small Budget--Check a Vintage or Thrift Shop

Vintage stores may not always offer exactly what you want, such as a perfect Titanic replica dress floating right up to you, but if you are willing to dig through some racks and think creatively, you can adapt many pieces available in a vintage shop or thrift store to fit your needs. Many times all it takes is a decorative shawl or large brimmed hat with hatband to authenticate a rather plain dress you are trying to pass off as Edwardian.

If You Have No Budget--Go as a Sailor

Hey, wouldn't you rather have been one of the sailors paddling the lifeboats anyway? Nab a whistle, hat and generic sailor attire for $20 or less at a costume shop and start searching for survivors.
