Some precautions are taken immediately after total knee replacement surgery to prevent the usual post-surgical risks. After a few days, you will be taught help your recovery process along while you are in the hospital and once you go home. While you will be able to maintain a normal lifestyle after your recovery, some things may have to be avoided.
Potential Risks After Surgery
Deep vein thrombosis is one risk after knee replacement surgery. If this happens, clots may form in the veins and travel and get stuck in the major arteries of the lungs. Infection is another possible risk; doctors and nurses keep a check on the incision for redness or swelling, which is a sign there may be an infection. Another risk after surgery is pneumonia.
Recovery
When leaving the hospital, you will be using crutches or possibly a walker. It is generally six to eight weeks after surgery before driving is permitted. Continue any medications or exercises prescribed while in the hospital.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation will be started while you're still in the hospital. This usually involves flexing the ankles, tightening and relaxing thigh muscles, raising the leg while keeping the knee straight and flexing the knee and hip.
After Physical Therapy
Once the physical therapy is complete, there is a good chance that you will have normal movement and strength in your knee. Most normal day-to-day activities and recreation can be resumed.
Precautions
Some activities should be avoided or approached cautiously, including running and downhill skiing.
